La Cosecha (w/ Arepazone Inside)

Pabellon arepa was delicious!!! Very tasty and soooo filling. I love the soft sweet plaintains, juicy tender beef, and the refreshing accompanying sauce. The entire arepa was a heavenly combination.

Mosaico is one of several eateries within La Cosecha market hall here in the Union Market neighborhood. It focuses on Venezuelan goodies like empanadas, arepas, perros calientes, and pepitos.After having learned how to make arepas during Covid thanks to a Yelp zoominar (yelp.com/biz/yelp-virtua… , I was curious to see how my creations stacked up to the real thing. By way of background, arepas are pancake-sized cornmeal patties at the core, which are then sliced in the middle to form a pocket that you can stuff with anything you want. So I had to go for the pabellon, which is a favorite variety of arepa in Venezuela. Here, it comes stuffed with shredded beef, sweet plantains, black beans, and queso fresco, and it was every bit as scrumptious as it sounds. The beef was savory and juicy, the plantains sweet and chewy, the beans as, well, earthy as they should be, and the queso fresco an added dimension of savory goodness. Together with the arepa shell, which was beautifully crisped on the outside, soft on the inside, and full of nourishing, comforting corn flavor throughout, this was all a complementary mélange of tastes and textures.Service is a casual as, like most other stands here at La Cosecha, you walk up to order and then receive a buzzer to let you know when to pick things up. A most excellent find among many here at this beautiful, contemporary market hall!

I feel DC nailed it with these food courts. I've seen good courts in the mall but imagine walking into a building and it is filled with bars, restaurants and small shops. I visited three times during my stay in DC. The court was filled with people. The diversity is welcoming and the range of people young and old. It's an extremely positive vibes.

So cool. Lots to eat and drink. Cool vibe. Can't wait to go back and try some other stuff.
