She provided everything she knew we would need from the Parmesan cheese to the small plates to individual cups for serving the marinara to each child to cutting the breadsticks in half. She went the extra mile and served it with a smile! The bar also has a gorgeous view of the river and trees in the back and it was clean and well kept. And the homemade pizza was absolutely delicious!
It 's hard to believe that this is the first review of Heather 's. This is a little gem in the Middle of Nowhere. Sure, the locals will tell you that Rockdale was almost the Capitol of Wisconsin...but it 's located in a tiny little village just outside of Cambridge. One of the few little rural watering holes I 've ever experienced that embraces 'city-folk ' with open arms. Not one of those bars you walk into, conversations stop, and everyone turns to look at you. That said, it is a bar of local farmers, laborers and folks from the area. But the classic mid-western friendliness is alive and well at Heather 's. Perhaps because is is so close to Cambridge, which has a tremendous amount of tourism in the summer, or perhaps because of the owner, Heather, whom I 've never heard a disparaging word out of her mouth for as long as I 've known her. She greets everyone with a smile, a sincere 'hello ', and follows it up with a stiff drink and a massive amount of food if you 're hungry. The food is tasty, but if you 're watching your weight (or your arteries) you 've come to the wrong place. Her Rockdale burger should probably be outlawed in most states. Delicious, but roughly a ton of ground beef on a bun with all the fixins ' and enough fries to put most people into cardiac arrest before you can say Uff-Da . For most normal people, it 's enough food to feed an entire family for a day or so. She also serves up some wonderful specials. My favorite were her gyros. You 'd never expect an amazing gyro to come out of a little, rural bar...but she 's perfected the art. Certainly worth trying. The staff that surrounds Heather is just as friendly and accommodating as Heather. Drinks are served up fast, strong and with a smile. While largely a 'beer bar ', they actually have a fairly good selection of liquors. Frequent live music (ranging from bluegrass to 'Harley Rock ' to top 40 DJs), incredibly cheap drinks and food, and...when I was last there...WiFi (just in case you like to drink and surf like I do). The view off the back patio is stunning, and there is ALWAYS something going on. This is really one of these little rural dive bars that is a dying breed. Walk in the door, and you 're an equal. If you 're friendly, the patrons are friendly. If you 're a pompous ass, you 'll get confronted. So, if you 're in the area, want to hang out with some down-to-earth people (who happen to wear cammo baseball caps, just finished milking cows, and will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about football, deer hunting and fishing), then stop on by. Well worth the trip to the Middle of Nowhere.
Only hung good about this place is the service. Ordered two different tap beers....both flat. Soggy onion rings and soggy bacon. Will not be returning to this dive.
We stopped in for burgers at the bar, and the special was a chipotle bacon cheeseburger, with pepper jack cheese. The concept was great, but unfortunately, the burger was over-cooked and dried out. Two things impressed me, though. One was that the fries $2.00 extra) were served very fresh and piping hot, which is something I always hope for and rarely get. It was a very large portion of fries, and they were thick and golden on the outside, and had perfect texture on the inside. The second thing that impressed me was the attentive service at the bar ... friendly and great about keeping drinks filled. They also have a very nice outdoor deck with a great view of the river area. I like the concepts of their special burgers, but on the next trip, I will request that they cook them just a little bit less.
Great food and great service. I recommend the Friday fish fry and the cheese curds. Their bacon burger and Tuesday all you can eat chicken wings are really good too!
