Manager recommends AVOID during deer hunting season. I’ve been traveling to Canby two to three times each year for twenty years. I was delighted to see Hero’s open to broaden the dining options. The menu is basic burgers, sandwiches, deep fried apps, iceberg lettuce club salad with dressing options served in plastic pouches like a fast food restaurant. Hero’s has dart boards, pool tables, pull tabs, and is very casual. Over our past ten visits service has been average to significantly below average. I have found the restaurant poorly staffed on obvious occasions like deer hunting season, and once while hosting a wedding reception. Typically when a restaurant kitchen is busy servers alert customers that their orders will be delayed. Other common restaurant practices are to comp some drinks, and to give customers updates in their dinner. Tonight after waiting over an hour to receive our food, the manager came over and insisted that they always provide good service, that our frustration for waiting over an hour was unreasonable, that is deer hunting season so they are busy and we shouldn’t expect to be served within an hour, and that if we chose to leave we would be responsible for the drinks we purchased (no problem) AND the food that was never delivered. Canby is a small town. Folks talk. Paying for the drinks was not an issue but demanding we pay for the meal we didn’t receive seemed unreasonable. We paid. We waited. Ten minutes later the manager asked if we would like the food to go how embarrassing to now ask for the food we had paid for. In the past I’ve enjoyed meeting up with family at Hero’s. I’ve always had a low expectation of the food and hoped for timely service which was hit or miss. From now on I’ll visit this restaurant if all others in Canby are closed.
