Having lived in Carstairs for a long time, we used to visit this restaurant for Chinese food regularly when it was known as Lucky Way and Golden Swallow. However, the recent change in ownership led to menu changes, higher prices, fewer options for group dinners, and the removal of some of our favorite dishes. Although the food was not terrible, it did not meet the standards set by the previous chefs. We will now be exploring other restaurants for our Chinese food cravings.
After a rocky start, the restaurant appears to be operating smoothly now. During our second visit in the early afternoon, it was fairly quiet. The owner served us and the service was good. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, hot and delicious. The vegetables were fresh and not overcooked. The Beef and Broccoli was as good as most places, but the Shanghai Noodles were lacking, being dry with little sauce. Overall, if you're looking for a satisfying Chinese meal, this place is not a bad choice. I plan to try their Friday night buffet next.
This seems to be a new restaurant, and they don't know what they're doing yet. The food tasted as though it came out of a box, and the service was almost non existent. We were promised soup, which never came, the western dish (pork chops)...was missing the mashed potatoes, and the vegetables were cold. Chopsticks had to be requested for the Chinese food, and the waitress didn't bother to refill the water. We weren't allowed to take the bill with us, only the bank payment slip. The only response provided by the waitress was that it wasn't her fault, it was the kitchen. The sign outside said they were fully licensed, but they weren't licensed at all. Apparently that will not happen for another eight weeks.
I love Hayden Block's a la carte setup: meats are priced per the half pound or unit, basic sides $4 each and bigger sides are priced per tray.
