The choice was 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 puds. We both had a starter of charcuterie with crudités- it consisted of 3 tiny cubes of pate, lettuce, a tablespoon of grated carrot and a teaspoon of couscous. We wanted a bottle of white wine, the only choice was St Pourcain or Menetou-salon. I asked if the pate was made by them, no they bought it. For the main course we both had beef bourguignon - 3 small cubes of beef arranged down the side of the plate with a drizzle of sauce, 3 small tinned boiled potatoes, a small bit of puréed butternut squash and a few small slices of carrot. Out of the 3 pieces of beef on my plate one was totally inedible - it was so tough I couldn't cut it! The chef came to see if it was good so I told him I hadn't enjoyed it - he then argued with me - I couldn't believe that he stood in front of me with his arms crossed in front of him in a very defensive manner and argued for a long time that I was wrong. I shut him up by saying I had owned my own restaurant and I knew what beef bourguignon should be like and it should be tender, thankfully I speak fluent French. He said I had cut it the wrong way, if I had turned the meat in a different direction it would have been fine, so I said I had turned the meat in every direction but still couldn't cut it - by this time he was really driving me mad he just kept arguing. Plus I mentioned about there only being 3 small pieces of meat on the plate - he said if we had wanted more then his customers only had to ask - as if anyone asks for more in a restaurant!!! You expect to pay a fair price for a reasonable sized meal in a local restaurant. He went away in a visible huff - we had cheese but not dessert as the choice was awful. They charged full price which surprised me. Certainly no idea about customer service or satisfaction. We went home hungry. I can fully understand why the locals don't frequent this restaurant. In such a small community word of bad service and poor food travels quickly. If I could have rated this as zero I would have.
Newly opened small auberge offering a simple lunch menu. Choice of two mains- today was classic steak frites, or oven cooked cod with sauce. Starter was a choice from the old buffet of salads, cold meats and pate, dessert was fondant or gateau basque. Well presented with warm, attentive service. A well balanced enjoyable meal in an agreeable atmosphere. Good value and lots to build on for the future. Merci et Bonne Chance!
Popped in on Sunday, "can you cope with 10 people for dinner later in the week?" "Of course, you could phone first if you want". Tuesday evening at 7.30 eight of us turned up, four people already inside. We asked for service, "non, n'est pas un reservation"
The innkeeper is a very friendly and relaxed guy with the motto "there is something else than fries". And this is more than true! This little restaurant in the little town of Cerilly serves simple, but very well cooked dishes. Everything is fresh, nothing comes from the microwave, and the prices are very gentle. Don't bother with the variety, the "plat du jour" (menu of the day) is always a hit. There is not too much to see nearby Cerilly, but I at least can fully recommend this restaurant. We even came back for dinner on the next day.
Very welcoming boss, good atmosphere. The meal was very good, I strongly advise you to go there. Keep going!
