Carole and I went with the family to a small gathering at Concourse recently. It’s situated right in the heart of the Beaumaris Concourse Shopping strip, and is thus in a prime location, where it could be expected to do very well indeed. Sad for the restaurant, it is relatively unpolished, certainly lacks atmosphere and hard to describe as to what its function really is - it is sad because it could be so much.It is also disappointing for the chefs, who we thought did a great job that night and we told them so. It’s just a pity that they are not supported by the restaurant /café owners. There were four of us in the group and, as we did not want an extensive meal, we simply chose one course each from the menu. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed the course that we chose. Interesting to note each chose something different and is best summarised by listing the choices here:Atlantic Salmon of grilled Atlantic salmon served on warm potato salad, topped with lime aioli & rocket, Concourse Mixed Grill of fillet steak, chicken, lamb cutlets, beef koftas, served with rosemary chats, mesculin salad & turkish rice and Calamari Salad of fried calamari, served on rocket salad, drizzled with lemon aioli. each of us reported separately that they thoroughly enjoyed their meal.I chose a Veal Milanese, in which the veal was coated with breadcrumbs, parmesan, parsley, pan fried and served on rosemary potato chats (oven baked) topped with rocket drizzled with balsamic glaze. Good and tasty and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The veal was delicious and I was thoroughly satisfied. The restaurant / café doubles as a bar as well so there is adequate liquor and wine available from a straightforward wine list. The night we went, which was a Saturday night, was poorly attended with probably 12 people present out of a potential 70. So it was sparse and hardly overrun by patrons. The single waitress was not overstretched and managed to serve the drinks requirement without too much trouble. I was staggered when I ordered a cup of white tea at the end of the meal and found it served in a glass with teabag and hot milk from the espresso machine. I had asked for the water to be boiled, as urn water does not make a great cup of tea. Correct making of a cup of tea is not a difficult job for anyone - the point made here is the lack of training provided and overseeing of staff. The lasting impression gained of the restaurant is it is seriously in need of some loving care and a thoroughly good polish to bring it back to its sparkling best. Against that scenario, together with the good food that it serves, it would do a lot better than what it does. Such a pity for a very well located restaurant which could offer so much. Given that the visit was on a Saturday night and it was so poorly attended, probably speaks volumes for its state.
This place has generally been poor the 5 years it has been open. The main problem excluding the awful food is that you get there with the owner half smashed and the bloke keeps drinking to finish the job in front of the patrons, the service is pretty shoddy. In a good spot and the restaurant itself looks good but it has been run so poorly it has no chance. A decent chef would be a start and a group of service people would improve it to where it shoild be.
Menu States fish of the day battered or grilled. Ordered grilled. Battered arrives. Staff argue that it doesn't say grilled. Point out to them that yes it does say both. They say can't do grilled. Offered grilled barramundi which we don't want. No other offer. When time to pay no discount but finally agrees on 10 percent. They say we should have sent meal back. Hey we tried. Manager was too busy out the front drinking with mates. We have been there before and been a good experience. Maybe under new management. Never again.
These guys do deals on Groupon all the time. But when you get there they exclude the priciest meals and give you a bottle of the worst wine you've ever tasted. And stated value is nowhere near what they claim it is. And then when you query them about it they go off their nut. Tell you they are doing you the best offer you've ever had. The rudest staff and owner I have ever met. It was empty because their offer and service is lousy. Do yourself a favour and go anywhere else.
