I sent it back and instead tried the soup, which was just average. It was clear that the fishcake had been overcooked and burnt, possibly prepared hours before. My friend ordered the Chicken liver pâté with carrot and apricot chutney, and toasted bread (no mention of mushrooms on the menu). She found a suspicious-looking slime on her salad, which turned out to be a mushroom when she asked the waitress. Overall, the experience was not great, but we had no issues with the dessert and hot drinks.
I had a great lunch at this hidden gem of a restaurant. The rabbit and wild boar pasty starter was delicious and just the right portion size. My fish pie was filled with high-quality fish, but it needed a little extra something to make it really stand out, like a hint of herb or some cheese in the sauce. Nonetheless, it was still very good. My wife's lamb dish was incredibly tender and the vegetables were cooked perfectly, offering a refreshing change from typical pub fare. The menu is the same for both lunch and dinner, so it would be nice to see some smaller plates available during lunch hours (not just sandwiches). Overall, this is a wonderful spot for a meal where you can expect excellent service.
This restaurant is truly exceptional, with fantastic food, a vibrant atmosphere, and a team of staff that is expertly led by manager Dan. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, delivering top-notch service. We are frequent visitors and hope to continue coming back for a long time.
A group of 11 ladies had a wonderful evening. Great atmosphere, hot food that was well presented, lovely staff but … the fact we could only choose off the Christmas menu when I personally would have preferred fish and chips. The menu was very limited with for example rabbit, venison and butter bean mash to go with the fish in a tomato and fennel sauce. Not the best of choices. The prices and unable to choose from the main menu will deter our return.
Disappointing. This pub used to be really good but our visit yesterday was not very good. Our party of 11 had a lot of niggles that added up to a very average/poor experience, mainly due to slow service slow but also meal quality was not as good compared to their usual standard. Pate starters were bland and tasteless this time, nowhere as good as I 've had before. The Christmas Dinner costs over £20 now and several of us found the turkey to be very dry. Comically we each had two cranberries dotted on the plate side, and a single sprout cut in half. There were other veggies of course, but my own green veg portion was cold. The portion size was fine and plenty of gravy but sadly cold plates meant a luke warm (definitely not piping hot) meal. Service was slow, and one person did not get their fish meal until other people had eaten half their main courses. I wanted to say something to the waitress but they did not check us...I later learned she checked a couple at the far end of the table but not everyone. They were understaffed and we had to order extra drinks at the bar ourselves, when usually we were frequently checked by staff if extra drinks are needed. The slowest service was for puddings, they took nearly 25 minutes and arrived well after the hot drinks that were supposed to come together. A staff member later said it says hot drink and pudding on the menu, does not say they come together . I thought he was joking but he clearly seemed unbothered by the delay. Minor things were niggling too, the waitress adamantly would not bring condiments until after all the meals were served. I had nearly finished my turkey when the cranberry sauce arrived. The puddings were the best part, the waffle mini pudding excellent. But my friend ordered the trifle and it was actually more like a chocolate mousse. We later were told only one member of staff made puddings hence the long delay. The total bill was £380 for 11 of us. Quite expensive given most of us had only two courses and drinks. In summary...used to be a good pub but standards have slipped.
