We're not sure if we can accommodate you." Despite the restaurant being empty, I continued to wait but eventually grew impatient and decided to dine elsewhere.
Booked the family evening on 31/12 in the Golf club. Place looked closed on arrival. Entered and found reserved table in the Bar. Seating for 5 booked for 8. Buffet meal announced on time. Advertised meal Hog roast marinated in sea salt and rosemary . Actual a tray of mildly warm pulled pork. Orchard apple sauce was a tasteless green slurry. Sage and onion stuffing none. Crackling none.Potato wedges anticipated them roast but were boiled, sliced in two with a cold herby marinade. Provided was cold cous cous, cole slaw. cold penne pasta and a bun to put the meat on. By 9.30 at least 40% of the people had left. About 10.30 empty tables and chairs moved to create a dance floor and the atmosphere improved. At 11.50 sound system turned off and TV switched to programme for Big Ben chimes. Unfortunately nobody could get the TV sound to link into the system. So had to rely on people with mobiles and the TV visuals to know when to celebrate New Year with the complementary fizz. Waste of time and money.
Ok, let 's get this straight. This is a review for the Golf course itself, not the hotel.... The Golf course websites boasts that it is one of the premier inland course in the uk....not from where I was standing I am afraid! The fairways were dire (in August and were like the first cut of rough in places, the greens were ok but patchy in places. The bunkers were unplayable in places and there were a few holes which to be honest weren 't very well laid out. (that is just my opinion though..... On the plus side, a lot of the rough was whispy long grass which I like. Reminded me of some good links courses, not so long that it was impossible to get a club on the ball. Some of the holes were well well laid out and you didn 't need to hit driver on every hole. The challenge came from dog legs and well placed hazards which meant having to plot your way around rather than blasting it to get distance. There are a lot of blind tee shots, which is fine if the pro shop has a shot saver? Or a course guide?..... guess what.... they didn 't and so it 's basically a guessing game. To be honest, I had high expectations.... and was disappointed by some stuff which was very avoidable. Shame
It's a golf course hotel, wth a pleasant view, and an open plan kitchen but the food was not impressive. The Pork was rather dry and my burger was almost tasteless. Didn't bother with pudding.
I recently visited this restaurant and what a hidden gem it turned out to be. I arrived early to practice at the driving range and was given a token for it. The club shop was fantastic and the staff were helpful in pointing out hazards on the course. The layout of the course was great with nice long holes, well-kept fairways, and stunning views. The greens were very fast and true. Overall, it was a fantastic course and definitely worth a visit. It's now in my top 10 of courses I've played.
