You will get a fantastic simple meal that you wouldn’t order at a regular restaurant with a hiliarous chef/ host/ owner manager. What a great meal get there early so you can sit outside sit down and enjoy. This will be one of my favorite meals of this trip if not many trips to France.
We had lunch here on a Sunday. From the photos, the restaurant is usually very busy. But we were lucky to have the restaurant mostly to ourselves when we arrived soon after it opened at noon. We were warmly greeted by a young man who spoke excellent English having lived in Ireland for two years (the owner Dede was not here today). The building is very old and the interior completely unique. Here is how the restaurant works. It is a set menu with one price. The starter is a small thin tarte flambee with onions on top. The main course is made up of fouee. These are small fluffy pieces of bread made from special flour and cooked in a wood fired oven. Several condiments in small round bowls accompany the fouee. Most of these are meat based, but a few are vegetarian (cheese and butter). You spread these inside the fouee after slicing it open or on top of it. It also comes with a green leaf salad with a tasty dressing. Vegetarians can eat here, but it is a no-go for vegans. The meal concludes with a dessert consisting of a small tart and another fouee filled with a red wine flavored jam. You can have as many fouee breads as you like – it’s all you can eat. We really enjoyed our meal here especially the friendly service from Matis. We wanted to try fouee bread and this is your chance. There is a small wine museum in the basement. Our only recommendation to the owner is to add a few vegan and a couple more vegetarian bowls to the menu so you can expand your customer base to those who don’t eat meat or meat-based products. Otherwise, this is an excellent restaurant for a meal and we highly recommend it.
Evening started out well, with the flamboyant Dede waving around jugs of wine (from a wine box) but then… This establishment might be a metaphor for the crisis in the French restaurant business. There are three rooms in this quirky establishment, probably seating 50 . It was full. There were two people preparing the food, one of those being the host who should have been at the front doing his showman thing. Instead he was seemingly having a row with the only other member of staff, a lady flustered and consequently bad humoured. Not a good look for someone serving at a restaurant. I recon the boss could have least hired two more servers even though the food was simple enough (essentially baked bread with a variety of spreads) The orders were backing up so we left before dessert. Might have been allot of fun had the place functioned like a restaurant , ie producing and delivering food in an orderly and timely fashion.
Take your friends . Relax. Eat what they serve. Have a good time wondering what the menu is you don’t get one) and enjoy the ambiance. Food is simple and good. I don’t know how much wine they would bring you if asked but pay the minimal price fixe and leave satisfied. Highly recommend.
He's a very good restaurant with his homemade snooze. The mood is like we're between friends. the boss as the room is atypical but very pleasant. it won't be appropriate if you are in perfection!!!Think either to book or arrived early, because there is very little room.I strongly advise you. We had a great time.
