I don 't generally write bad reviews but in this case I had to let everyone else know not to waste your time or money with this place when there are so many better restaurants in Madrid. The name is actually El Viejo Leon BAR. It 's you 're traditional Madrid bar rather than an upscale restaurant. However the prices are set up to seem as if it were an upscale restaurant. Let 's talk about about our main course: overdone steak . Not good quality meat with salad dressing on top... yes there was actually kraft style Roquefort salad dressing on top of our steak . Completely defies logic that this would get four out of five stars on trip advisor. I am losing trust in the the rating system on trip advisor.
We did a wine tasting for 25 euros.. was meant to include some picoteo or tapas, but they were few in between and extremely average, to say the least, only the tortilla was worthy of a bite! And the wine itself.. well.. for 25 euros we could have bought almost 3 full bottles of it, as opposed to 4 tasting glasses (just a taste and much smaller than the average glass). In any case we met sime great people and had a good time, but unfortunately were not pleased by the food and wine encountered...
Located on a side street in the quiet Salamander neighborhood of Madrid, this restaurant is a real surprise. We decided to try it because it was located walking distance from our hotel. We had our doubts as to whether it served French food because its name is Spanish. But, it is a French restaurant, and quite a good one. It is a charming, but small restaurant with only 8 tables. Although reservations were suggested, we went at 9 pm (early for dinner by Spanish custom) on a Tuesday and needed no reservation. My wife and I both had the French onion soup which was excellent. I had entrecote de Paris, a steak with a fine tasting sauce which came with sauteed potatoes and a small salad. My wife had a vegetable crepe. Both were delicious. Now for the quirks. There is only one waiter, an elderly gentleman, who I believe was the owner. He was kind, efficient and attentive, but he did not speak either French or English. (On the other hand, whomever was doing the cooking probably had been to France and knew what they were doing). Next, the restaurant had only 3 menu books available. Three were in Spanish and one was in English . However, the English translation was so bad as to be unintelligible. In the end, I used the Spanish menu which was more understandable (after 2 weeks in Spain) than the English one which was useless. And if you did not understand Spanish, you were guessing. If it were not for this, I would give this restaurant 5 stars.
