The Fish Wife - Cork

The employees are welcoming and the fish and chips are exceptionally tasty. There is no dining area in the restaurant, but you can enjoy your meal at the tables located across the street. We frequently visit this place to grab a bite to eat.

I ordered the fish and chips at this restaurant. The dish had a generous portion of fries, which were good, but the amount of fish seemed to be lacking in comparison. The fish itself was too greasy for my liking. Overall, I felt that the dish was overpriced at 13 Euros considering it felt more like an appetizer than a full meal.

We had the best fish and chips ever at this restaurant. The chips were amazing, freshly cut at home, and the tartar sauce was homemade. We will definitely come back again.

Ordered 2hake and chips today and when I collected the order I asked again to make sure it was hake, I was told it definitely was but when we got home it was just disgusting. It most definitely was not hake but also the fish was mostly empty batter that was not fresh because it smelled there was lots of lettuce thrown on top of the chips to hide the fact that the portion was so small the peas were solid and cold it was the worst I ever had. I have eaten here before and it was always lovely but I hadn’t been there for a while and now I won’t be back, I’m thinking maybe it has been taken over by someone else and that would explain the huge difference between now and the last time I was there but who knows. I rang them and I got absolutely no satisfaction so my advice would be AVOID.

I will say that I haven't tried too many fish chips in Cork yet only three places before this one where the Clayton Hotel had the best tasting out of those three but The Fish Wife definitely holds the first place for me. Had the cod with chips and the cod was so tasty. Usually the fish in fish and chips can be under-seasoned and dry but this was neither and the portion was large too. For €11.50 this was well worth and the remoulade sauce was great too. Only negative I can think of is that they don't have seating there, at least not now during Covid so you have to plan for a place to eat but they did offer cutlery but I live close by so didn't need it.
