This didn’t bother me today since I wasn't in the mood for it, but it may be frustrating in the future. Our server, Leah, provided near-perfect service. She was friendly and always wore a smile, attentive without being intrusive, and prompt with her service. I decided on the butterfly shrimp lunch special, which came with a choice of soft drink or tea and a daily soup—lentil on this occasion. I wouldn't usually choose lentil soup, but I tried it anyway; while tasty, it wasn't to my liking. I can't fault the cook, as it was flavorful; it just wasn't my preference. Our main courses arrived around 10 minutes after we placed our order. The shrimp was cooked well, although I found the flavor a bit overpowering. I’ve always liked their side salad, and today it was enjoyable again, though there was one small issue: they went a little heavy on the dressing. I prefer just a bit, while others might like more, so I can’t hold that against them too much. The potatoes and rice, as usual, were great. Portion sizes at Au Vieux Duluth are always generous; I’ve never left feeling hungry. My lunch was slightly pricey at $14 plus tax, but the amount of food you get makes up for it. Normally, I would rate my experience a solid four stars thanks to the souvlaki, but since I chose a different dish today, I didn’t enjoy it quite as much. Still, it satisfied my hunger. I would definitely recommend Au Vieux Duluth as a lovely restaurant with good food, especially if you're feeling hungry!
Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing, and I cannot recommend this restaurant. The food was subpar, drink offerings were mediocre, and our feedback was poorly received by the server. She seemed to make a personal remark regarding my lack of teeth when my wife suggested that the steak was tough. Instead of addressing our concerns, the server insisted that my dental situation must have influenced my perception of the steak's toughness. They did offer us a filet mignon, but we chose to decline and made do with what we could eat, leaving feeling let down—especially on such a special occasion. Overall, the experience was really disheartening. Sincerely, Mr. and Mrs. R. Dinelle.
The portions at this restaurant are enormous, but I found the atmosphere lacking. The tables were crammed too close together, making it difficult to move around. I was seated in the middle, and every time I needed to go to the restroom, I had to ask everyone to move out of the way! On a positive note, I highly recommend the grilled chicken and the salmon—both were delicious! The staff were friendly, although it didn't seem very busy when we visited.
I've never been to a Vieux Duluth before, and I'm pretty confident I won't be returning. Honestly, at the end of the day, this chain has the appearance of good food with out actually serving good food. There's no authenticity, everything tastes like it came from Costco and the only things they got right are the ambiance and the water. I think their menu was designed by accountants rather than chefs (that was a Jamie Oliver line btw, I wish I could take credit for it).
