The staff were very attentive and friendly without being smothered. It is a charming basement location with low romantic lighting. There are even fresh rosebuds on each table.
I 've been dining at La Cave since the late 70 's (my parents were the early version of todays ' foodies , especially my Dad! . A fantastic date night spot that oozes with the classiness of so many now long gone Orange County fine dining establishments (Bob Burns, Villa Nova, Chez Cary, The Arches, Isidore 's, Riviera, Sid 's... . There is NOTHING on the menu that isn 't amazing and well worth the cost. To those who frown upon the lack of prices on the menu, it 's pretty simple: If you have to ask, then it 's not a place for you or your wallet. The ONLY negative that I would mention is that there *should* be a dress code of at least no hats, no shorts, no T-shirts. It 's high time that class return to dining, and this is the perfect place for that to happen! Bravo to the owners and staff for preserving this jewel of Orange County 's past. John Wayne, Andy Divine and Buddy Ebsen would approve!
I love the entire experience! Ambiance and service was impeccable.. Everyone was attentive and drinks were served promptly I had a salad, twice baked potato and the halibut which was cooked to perfection! YUM! Went for a bday dinner, loved the surprise lava cake at the end. Also delicious!
Most everything was as expected: The food was well prepared, and the service was quite enjoyable. Very attentive. Sadly, La Cave is old and is in need of a refresher... the seat at the table was so old that it sank way down to an awkward height. The bar sits directly in the middle far wall of the dining room and the two televisions really take a lot away from the ambiance. This is a local place and I'm sure there were lots of regulars here because the food is good. It is pricey. We had a cocktail, a bottle of wine for 4 people and each had an entree with a salad... the bill came to over $425 pre-tip. One note: When we arrived there was a homeless fellow who had crashed beneath the outside staircase, and was engaged in a profane shouting match between himself and the building leaseholder. Not the kind of atmosphere I hoped for my wife's birthday. I know they have little control over a homeless person's choice of location, but they don't need to add to the cursing atmosphere.
Mike and Lora Palitz have kept this Newport Beach icon steak house still at the top of the rest. From Fiona the Mater'D to Edgar the waiter to the singers in the next room, La Cave is an outstanding experience. All this is only topped by the food. The Filet was cooked to perfection, the lobster was juicy, and the garlic mushrooms made the meal. Cant wait to go back.
