The Morritt - County Durham

So disappointing. Have been coming here for a long time but today was the last. The service was slow (with an almost empty bar/restaurant) and the food was overpriced and basic. Pity!

After seeing reports of the restoration of the murals we expected to have to fight out way to the bar! What we hadn't realised was how isolated the hotel is so found the bar empty and we were able to get great pictures of the artwork. The staff were great and the beer well kept though a little pricey. We called in during our walk from Bernard Castle and there is now a signposted trail connecting to the Teesdale Way. Not a difficult walk for even the most casual hiker.

We had lunch at this restaurant on a Sunday and we were very disappointed by the high prices and lack of freshness in the food. The vegetables were overcooked in the microwave, the roast potatoes tasted old, and the roast chicken was dry and tasteless. My husband's vegetarian roast was bland and overcooked, with a very small portion. The atmosphere in the room was lacking and the staff seemed indifferent. We spent £45 on two lunches and drinks, and it was not worth it. We will not be coming back.

Fabulous murals complement the decor. Rustic bar setting. Bar meal choices were varied. Chicken and leek pie was a firm favourite as half of us chose it! Staff quickly moved tables to ensure we could all sit together. Enjoyable evening catching up with everyone's news. Friendly atmosphere.

We were so happy that we didn't read any reviews before visiting this pub/restaurant, as we may have missed out on a hidden gem. The food was top-notch and served in generous portions. The Ox cheeks bourguignon was especially filling, so you might not even need a starter. The fish and chips were delicious with a crispy batter and thick homemade chips. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was charming with an attractive outdoor seating area. Overall, a great choice for a meal out.
