Kao Gaeng - Darien

Kao Gaeng used to be a decent place for Thai food, but unfortunately it has closed down. It has been taken over by another restaurant called Bua Thai. We ordered from there without realizing the change in ownership, and the food was terrible.

We ordered dinner at this restaurant, just a heads up that they close early so be sure to place your order at least one hour before closing. I called ahead before they closed and they weren't prepared to make spring rolls. We tried the fresh spring rolls, fish cakes, pad kra pow with fried egg, and pad thai. I enjoyed the fish cakes, but found the spring rolls to be just okay - I prefer the Chinese version. The pad kra pow was really delicious, but I wasn't a fan of the sauce on the pad thai, as it was too sweet for my taste. Overall, this restaurant is conveniently located near my new house and I look forward to trying more items from their menu.

I ordered the ginger chicken dish and was disappointed that it lacked the ginger flavor. I also tried the chicken satay and it was basically just a plain cooked chicken breast cut into slices. I wouldn't recommend eating here and I definitely won't be returning.

Pretty good food from Kao Gaeng. Our food was ready really quickly and we got it to go. We got the Pad See Ew which had a lot of flavor. The portion sizes weren't huge for the price, but it would be a good lunch size. There are lots of good options in the menu for everyone!

Just had Kao Gaeng for dinner and still feel hungry and unsatisfied. I ordered two very basic things, a chicken pad thai and mix vegetable beef entree. The entree was like a lunch portion, served in a half container with rice on one side. The vegetables tasted raw and were barely cooked. Then the chicken was way overcooked, had a rubbery texture and didn't taste like anything. Both sauces were passable, which was the saving grace, but pretty run-of-the-mill. My food experience didn't seem to match the high ratings.
