Alcan Smokehouse Ltd - Dawson Creek

Oddly laid out with decor that is almost there but end up looking uncannily uncomfortable. Just doesn't feel right. Service is not quite up to par. Slow and unprofessional. Not unfriendly but in over their head. The beef brisket was uneatable. Hard as a hockey puck. One of the handful of meals I have ever sent back in my 50 years. Granted, it's hard to cook beef brisket, but don't sell it if you can't make it. Tortellini was ok.

Stopped in Dawson Creek on our drive through BC to Alaska to take photos of the Mile 0 sign for the Alaska Hwy. It was a chilly day. We asked a local for a recommendation of a place to eat and she told us to go to the Alcan Smokehouse. We had parked in front of it but had not considered going in. I am vegetarian and had anticipated that I would have a hard time finding something to eat here. How wrong I was! There was a large and varied menu. I had an excellent ginger carrot soup and a bowl of very good Bowtie Baked Cheese. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his French Onion soup. It was all served piping hot. Unfortunately we were too full for these yummy sounding desserts. The restaurant and bathroom were very clean. The service was very good.

Fantastic smoked pork ribs and brisket. The blasted potatoes are crunchy and tasty. The service and wait staff are excellent and very friendly. Good place to eat if you enjoy great smoked meats.

Oh boyo boy... where to start. Service and bacon potato soup were excellent, and what earned the extra star. If you are a Smoked Meat Sandwich Purist, turn around immediately and RUN as fast as you can, it 's nothing short of blasphemous. Everything wrong about this sandwich; served on thick, heavy, toasted (or in my case, burnt) wheat-bread, smothered in some sort of mayonnaise-type dressing , topped with miserable amount of terribly dried-out chewy meat. Caesar salad was tiny, over-dressed and mostly croutons. Server was very pleasant, but I can think of many other things to do with $24... like light it on fire. Do yourself a favour: go down the street to grocery store, grab loaf of Rye bread, package of smoked meat, btl of mustard and sml jar of pickles for $10, and you 'll have dynamite sandwiches all week.

I really want to love this place and support a local business, but I 've been here 4 times and it 's been bad every time. Slow service and mediocre-at-best food. My last experience was tonight. I waited 1 hour for my takeout which was supposed to be a 20 minute wait. The waitresses kept telling me it would be 6 minutes, then that it was being boxed up, then that it was almost ready, and again that it was being bagged. I waited in the restaurant over half an hour! So in total it took an hour to be ready. I complained to the managers/owners who just gave excuses and made me feel bad about saying something. They forgot to give me my drinks that I had paid for, so I had to go back to get them. The food itself was terrible. The pasta was over cooked and the cheese sauce cold and congealed. The meat was cold and dry, and they forgot 2 sauces that we had paid for. When I called to tell them about the cold food and missing items. they didn 't seem to care. I asked for them to refund part of the money I paid, and the guy said 'we won 't do that ' and then hung up on me. I 'll be contacting my credit card company to request a refund. I 'll never come back here.
