Gold Star Chili - Dayton

The chili cheese coneys are fantastic, and the Parmesan garlic fries are incredible!

The 4-way with onions, along with the chili cheese dogs topped with jalapeños, were pretty good on this visit. While Gold Star may not be the top choice for Cincinnati-style chili, it definitely stands out as the best in Dayton.

I just went hit the drive thru for a pretty hefty order and after waiting about 10 minutes on my food, I return my house to find hardly any garlic parm on my garlic parm fries. Pretty expensive fries to only be able to eat 3 or 4 fries that actually have what I ordered on them. The rest just regular ole fries. Have called numerous times with no answer after I just left the parking lot 5-10 minutes ago and plan on taking picture of said fries to show the manager if I ever do plan on giving them anymore of my business. Might have nothing to do with owner/food but possibly caused by poor management and also poor training methods. Each order of fries should have the same amount of garlic parm and this is the saddest excuse of $5.28 I've ever spent on food.

The food quality is good, but the value is poor. The hot dog in the coney was only about the size of my fingers—really small. It was gone in just two bites, which wouldn’t be a big deal if it hadn’t cost $2. After pulling out the empty rolls, I was left disappointed with the coney shown in the picture below.

Since I tried Skyline a couple of weeks ago I naturally had to try Gold Star. It is amazing how similar these two establishments are in terms of the food offering, how the food is served, and how similar the flavor profiles are. Yes there are some subtle flavor differences; and I am sure die hard fans will argue otherwise, but I find either establishment to be equal and would have no specific dining preference between the two restaurants.
