Grumpy Goat Tavern Des Moines

What happened to the Grumpy Goat? It used to be our favorite restaurant; in fact, it was the first place we went when Covid restrictions were lifted. However, our last two visits were disappointing. On our first visit, we ordered the nachos (my personal favorite), but what came was a basket of cold, stale chips (which appeared to be store-bought) topped with cold, congealed toppings. The server only returned to our table to bring the check. We thought it was just a one-time incident, but sadly, our next visit was even worse. I ordered the brisket sandwich with homemade chips. After taking a bite of the sandwich, I discovered that instead of brisket, I had been served a sandwich filled with mostly gristle. It was inedible. The chips were cold, stale, and burnt. We also ordered appetizers that never arrived. Our server was nowhere to be found; we finally spotted him chatting with coworkers at the bar. When I showed him my sandwich, he asked if I wanted a to-go box and then offered to remove it from the check. We had to remind him to also remove the missing appetizers. These incidents weren't isolated to just one Grumpy Goat location; they happened at both the Ankeny and West Des Moines locations. It's disheartening to see a once-popular hangout for my family deteriorate so much. Covid is not an excuse for such poor quality. The thought of returning to the Grumpy Goat fills me with dread.

We were unable to dine at this restaurant because when we entered, we discovered they were adding a 4% surcharge for using a credit or debit card. We were disappointed by this unexpected additional cost and decided not to eat there. Charging extra for hamburgers and sandwiches, which are already priced at $17, seems unreasonable to us. We will not be returning to this establishment.

This breakfast was the most delicious I have ever had. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

My fiancée and I came here for a drink. not only the personal was rude, which allowed the patrons to be rude to us. about us for our drinks that were advertised less. if they don’t play on the “right” team, I would recommend you not apply this place. I wouldn't judge as staring if that was an option.

I like the atmosphere but considering the news lately, I won’t return.
