Stobies Restaurant - Desbarats

Both of us got fried white fish with mashed potatoes (since they were out of baked (at 5:30pm)) and gravy and that's it. The fish was dry and more fishy than normal for us. Charges us $16.95 each for the fish and what looks like $1.75 each for something else (for the gravy???).There credit card machine was down, They gave no adjustment for US $ cash we gave which is outrageous! Was it because we were not local?Bottom line: we paid $45 US total for very little. We will not be stopping again when we travel Highway 17, and I encourage any thru travelers to drive past and find something better.

The place was filthy. Wife went to the women's room to find absolute filth. Food is third rate greasy spoon garbage. Wasn't worth finishing. Never shall return.

Was surprised at the large portion meals for the price. A typical greasy spoon type place, but better. Wouldn't hesitate taking my family there on my next trip.

All I can say is that I am disappointed after reading the reviews. I expected better. I ordered the Philly Steak Sandwich, hubby ordered a burger and fries. I asked for a milkshake but was told by the waitress she didn't have time for that......wow really that's a first for me and there were a few people in the restaurant, most were at the point of leaving and by the time our food came there were only 3 tables left including ours. It is a pretty basic menu, nothing overly excitig on it. When my philly cheese steak arrived, the cheese was chedder (also a first for me philly's are always cooked with provolone cheese), the worst part was the bun it was a cheap sawdust out of the bag type bun (not the usual ciabetta buns that you normally find philly's served on. Hubby's burger had the same cheap out of the bag sawdust bun. He said his burger was tasty as were his fries and gravy. I was left feeling hungry when I finished my philly (also a first I order philly's alot this place doesn't cut it). Our sandwiches also didn't come with the standard fries included that was an extra cost $3.50 + $1 for gravy. Our lunch came to $30 we left dissatisfied and in my case hungry. When we went to pay we were told cash or debit only......no signs anywhere to note this when you enter. The waitress not overly friendly. The place itself was clean but the seating is terrible as it is not comfortable. All in all it was average across the board and I won't rush back!

Since I live in this area, I have visited the restaurant many times and I find that the food is consistently good. The price is a bit on the steep side but the good food and service makes up for the elevated prices. As far as atmosphere is concerned, it certainly isn't the fanciest restaurant around but as long as I walk out with a smile on my face, who cares.
