AMAZING fish tacos.... Atmosphere so relaxing with great music, art work and the staff was exceptional. I WILL be back.
Absolutely worth the trip! Great food. Excellent pricing and a great atmosphere. A must stop for anyone traveling through northwestern Illinois.
It seems like everyone else has positive things to say about this place, so maybe we just went on a bad night. Nonetheless, here 's my experience: We dined at Orom as a party of 4 on a Friday night in December. There were maybe 6 other diners total in the restaurant, and a few open tables. Instead of seating us at a table for 4 (which remained empty the entire night), we were seated at a huge table for 8. The table was clearly two smaller tables pushed together with a tablecloth over the top. This was a little strange, but whatever. However, the tables were of different heights, creating a little ledge in middle of the table. Of course, one of us (okay, it was me) placed his wine glass down in that spot, and it tipped over, spilling red wine all over the table (and myself). Our waitress (whose name I won 't share here) was none too helpful in cleaning it up, and she gave off the strong impression that she was irritated that anyone could have made such a silly mistake. Ultimately, she added another tablecloth to the top of the spill, which soaked up a bit of the wine and left a nice red puddle beneath my plate for the remainder of the night. The food was decent: Pork cheeks I didn 't try this, but my friend said it was good. Steak Another friend ordered this. I tried some, and it was good. Cooked the way she requested it. Lamb chops These were not done very well. A good lamb chop is super tender, but this was pretty tough, which makes me think it was probably cooked on high heat. Rainbow trout This was okay. Nothing special. A few notes on the food: Each meat dish came with the exact same fresh vegetables, which consisted of steamed brocolli and carrots with mashed potatoes. They were bland and boring. The salad that came with each dish was just a spring greens mix with balsamic. Before making a reservation, my wife called to ask if they would have anything vegetarian as an entree, and she was assured that they would. Perhaps the person on the phone thought that fish was vegetarian? I have no problem if a restaurant decides not to have a veggie option, but the staff should at least know what vegetarian means. Overall, we were very disappointed in our experience, especially the service. Our waitress was inattentive and unfriendly. We had empty water glasses for most of the night. I get the impression that fine meats are their specialty, so if that 's your thing, maybe give it a shot. But you 're certainly not paying for any semblance of creativity or hospitality.
This is an excellent restaurant. It is the only restaurant that I've visited in the Sauk Valley that I would recommend without hesitation. It seats few, so make sure to get a reservation. The service is excellent, food is thoughtfully prepared and delicious, atmosphere is subtle and lends itself to conversation.
