On our way to the Mont St Michel, our group of four decided to stop for lunch at Dol de Bretagne. We had read some mixed reviews on Trip Advisor about the Bar du Centre, but decided to give it a try. When we arrived, the "patronne" was obviously having a bad day, and was shouting at the young waitress in front of the customers. To our dismay, one of our party was subjected to the same treatment when she politely asked for clarification regarding one of the dishes. The waitress, who was obviously inexperienced, got our food order wrong, but we didn't dare to point that out for fear of being subjected to another outburst!! On the plus side, the simple lunch of galettes and salad was good and reasonably priced. No doubt the Bar du Centre will have its regular local customers, but visitors passing through Dol may wish to avoid it. All in all, a totally surreal experience!
I am coeliac so I always have to eat gluten-free. I explained this to the waitress when I ordered a salad, and asked her to make sure the chef was aware of the need to avoid gluten-containing ingredients coming into contact with my food. The salad as described on the menu didn’t include anything containing gluten, but cross-contamination is always a risk, and also, you can sometimes be taken by surprise by a gluten-containing decorative garnish. I consider it helpful to check this whenever I eat out. I am a fluent speaker of French, so there is no communication problem. I was absolutely stunned when the lady running the establishment reprimanded me angrily for making a fuss about gluten when there were no gluten-containing ingredients listed for this dish. I tried to explain but couldn’t get a word in - she clearly didn’t want to listen. I was with a group of friends and was reluctant to have them set off in search of another place to eat, as they had already placed their orders, but had I been on my own I would have left immediately. I found the lady’s tone and attitude so discourteous that it detracted from the enjoyment of the meal. I will not return.
We enjoyed a typical French Steak Frites lunch here with a good wine, a home-made rhubarb & apple tarte, & a coffee for only 34 euros - quite a bargain! It is very central and service was good on a day when the town was full of people for a music festival - a memory of old France which, alas, is being replaced by burger bars and 'Mac Do'.
