On the evening of 8/10/23, three middle-aged Londoners visited a JDW restaurant in Dover while camping nearby. We had planned ahead for a meal and drinks at this pub, and arrived at around 19:40 to find it bustling with activity. We were lucky to find a table near electric sockets, as one of us needed to join an online game later. We ordered our food and drinks using the app, with one of us getting a surprise discount on their veggie all day brunch. I opted for the battered cod, our friend chose a veggie beyond burger, and the drinks arrived promptly and were delicious. The meals were served hot and were of good size, accompanied by sauces from the bar. After we finished, we moved to a cooler table with an electric socket, where we relaxed and socialized. The clientele included locals as well as tourists from Germany, Poland, and France. We ordered a panini and apple crumble with Vanilla Ice Cream, along with more drinks, before heading back to the campsite. The total bill came to 36.40, which we found very reasonable. Overall, we left satisfied and content with our experience at the restaurant. It's unfortunate to hear that JDW is closing down The Capitol in Forest Hill, SE London, despite their success post-pandemic.
After waiting for over 45 minutes, our food finally arrived cold. We were informed that the pizza oven was broken, so we couldn't order pizza, but the other food was clearly ready and waiting. My daughter was so hungry that she ended up eating her cold meal. We decided to wait for our food to be recooked, but when it arrived 1 hour and 30 minutes later, it was even colder than before. We left the restaurant feeling disappointed. Although the manager refunded our meals, the terrible service and poor quality of the food was unacceptable.
The Eight Bells is located on Dover’s high street and is easily accessible on foot or by public transport. Parking is available within a few minutes walking. My wife and I visited for brunch at the weekend. Ordering was quick and easy, but service was slow, taking over 35 minutes to receive our food. The food was very average filling, but not the best quality. For the price paid, a very reasonable meal. Overall, good for a standard meal at a good price.
