It was fun to visit the VW factory, but the food was only ok (desserts were actually huge and quite good) and the service was the worst we have had in a long time. I'd visit and eat somewhere else next time.
Lesage Restaurant is located in the Glass Manufactur of Volkswagen where VW assembles their high end cars. There are views of the factory from the dining area. By the end of our meal we weren't surprised there were so few other customers there on a Saturday evening for dinner. There was wait staff training going on the night we were there and we were asked if it was OK. Certainly we replied since most times restaurants aren't forthcoming about training staff on 'real' customers leaving some awful incidents to colour the meal. Our trainee wait person was nervous but enthusiastic, hope it lasts, as our bread was brought with our choice of two accompaniments: tapenade or pesto, or tomato marmalade or some sort of orange cheese. Only the tapenade was a success. My Dining Companion ordered the Terrine of Salmon and I chose the Picandou. The terrine was fridge cold surrounded with a lemon foam. The delicate taste of the salmon was dulled by the cold and drowned by the intensity of the lemon. My Picandou sat on grilled courgettes around a center of dressed lamb's lettuce. It was OK, certainly not worthy of the setting. My Guinea fowl would have been fine on its own but the dish was tarnished by the slop of a green mash potato and three, yes, three, piles of sliced carrots. There must be a plenty of fresh carrots available as the three piles were two too many. Each tasted exactly the same and I can only guess were plopped on the plate to take up the space. My DC had the Veal cheek which came buried in a huge pile of noodles, not freshly made, that couldn't be finished by the hungriest of diners. Since we were here we went all the way and ordered dessert. The DC had the Blackberry tart which looked promising but tasted of nothing. I bravely ordered the Creme Brulee which was over set and came with Blood Oranges in a thickened sauce that had been cooked. There's a reason cooked Blood Oranges aren't on many menus, because it's a shame to do it to such a lovely fruit and the results are a gluey, tasteless mess. Avoid at all costs.Lesage sits surrounded by high tech but what it puts on the plate isn't worthy of the setting. The wait staff were friendly and nice and our wine was poured promptly and with little fuss but the food isn't worth the trek even if someone else if picking up the tab.
A little like its Volkswagen Factory location Lesage is clearly having difficulties. We visited on a Friday night and there was only one other table occupied. We were given "a gift from the chef" a piece of warm / old monkfish with a mango mayonnaise salad, a rice ball with sesame seeds and something orange in the middle and soy sauce. Truly inedible! We ploughed on. My starter of duck strudel was actually duck paste in undercooked filo pastry. My husbands soup flavourful but very watery. My main course of Guinea foul, mash and carrots wouldn't have made it onto British Airways. It was covered with an unexpected and flavourless foam. The potatoes had been mashed with the chives to a lurid green clashing with undercooked carrots which were meant to have almonds which if there were indiscernible. My husbands veal cheeks were a bit better but covered in the same foam and very salty. All in all for 110 euros with half a bottle of wine a truly awful experience. I have never written a bad review before but I can honesty say that not only is this the worst meal I have had in Germany but the worst that I can remember. A great shame.
The setting of this restaurant presents the perfect location for a Christmas Brunch and these folks went out of their way to make us feel welcome. It was essential to make a booking and we did so less than a week before and were welcomed. They had a pianist who played wonderful melodies from aloft whilst we enjoyed brunch. The food was good as you would expect from Kempinski who actually run the catering for the facility. The VW Currywurst lived up to its expectations. We had withdrawal symptoms from not having had eggs benedict for nearly 6 months and the Chef made a special creation fit for a king for us - this alone made the experience a culinary delight and it only cost 8 euro extra for two people...Inclusive of a guided tour of the facility and a full brunch with drinks and extras we still managed to get change from 100 euro for a top experience.
