Caerlaverock Tea Room - Dumfries

Like many of the stalls along the SW300, parking was free (as indicated by the restricted lock), and the restrooms were very clean, modern, and also free to use. The staff in the gift shop were friendly and welcoming. It's definitely worth taking a stroll around the moat; despite the back of the castle being in ruins, I found it much more interesting than the front.

How many triangular castles have they visited? This place is definitely worth a visit, even if you can't go inside right now, which is why I couldn't give it 5 stars. However, you can walk around the outside and admire it from every angle—it's a stunning contrast to hiking. The path leads you down to the original lock and then to the coastal area. There are plenty of parking spaces, a playground, picnic tables, restrooms, and a shop, all of which are currently free to use.

During my recent visit, the castle was closed for maintenance, but the grounds are absolutely beautiful, and there’s a lovely café on-site. Notably, this area features the only triangular lock in Britain, which is quite impressive. In a previous visit, I explored the castle itself, and I found its architecture to be uniquely fascinating, giving it an unusual charm that adds to its appeal. It’s definitely worth a visit! There is also a lovely children's play area, and further down you can explore the ruins of the original castle. It’s a great spot for a picnic. The staff were friendly and helpful as well.

One of the most interesting to look at castles I've seen, even though it was closed for safety reasons when I attended. You can walk around the castle grounds and photograph around the moat which surrounds the castle itself and there is a gift shop and toilets on site (open) as well as a woodland walk, which brings you to an excavated site where the old castle stood.
