I ordered the spicy chicken and received a dish with slimy, cold, and soft chips. The place was empty, so there was no atmosphere at all. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. I ordered red wine by the glass, but two of the reds on the menu were unavailable. Eventually, I got a bottle of Protea Shiraz instead of the Merlot I originally ordered. The servers seemed unable to hear the constant chatter coming from the kitchen. I imagine the founder, Atasca, would be turning in their grave. I tried to post a photo of my second attempt at getting crispy chicken, but it turned out to be hopeless as well.
I've just moved to Durban North, and since my partner and I are passionate about food, we decided to hunt for a good Portuguese restaurant. Atasca had excellent ratings, so we chose to visit on a Saturday night at 6 PM with a group of six. I ordered the prawn special, but unfortunately, that’s where the experience took a turn for the worse. There was no manager present, and we were given two regular bread rolls instead of the traditional Portuguese ones, along with a small container of margarine. When my prawns arrived, they were drenched in a peri-peri sauce that was anything but mild; it seemed to be simply warmed-up sauce from the bottle on our table. I wasn’t offered any alternatives, like lemon or garlic butter. Overall, it was a rather average meal. Thanks, Ronell.
This is a fantastic restaurant! I dined in for breakfast, and the service was excellent. The price per person was around R 100–150. I highly recommend trying the Atasca Lemon Buttered Half Chicken served with spinach and butternut.
