This is a very new restaurant here in East Hartford. This place is not to be confused with the Toby 's on Main St. in East Hartford (the coffee and sandwich shop). It 's unfortunately located in a very run down mall. This is the former Goong Korean restaurant. I 've never had Peruvian before so this will be a new experience. I 've had Colombian , so I expect it to be similar. It is pretty cold in here too. I see the A/C is working! Music is ethnic too. First problem, the server 's (who is Colombian) English is bad. I 'm on my own. So be it. I 'll just order it and see what happens. I 'm a little disappointed in that the first several items on the drinks menu are not available. The good news? There 's no liquor here (they 're working on it). I 've had plenty this week anyhow. So, I 'll start with a papaya natural fruit juice. In 2020, India produced 43% of the world supply of papayas. I would never have known it would been India ! I hear them actually making this fresh in a blender. This is good . It 's not very sweet. For a pretty thick drink , it 's probably low in sugars and calories. For my appetizer, I 'm trying the Ocopa Arequipena which is a smooth sauce flavored with black mint from the Huacatay plant. OMG . What am in for? This plate is like 1 1/2 feet long! They use metal utensils but in a disposable napkin. This is really good ! The sauce has a unique taste. The closest thing, in taste, would be a spicy deviled egg filling. Those five lumps you see are potato slices on a bed of high quality lettuce leaves. The sauce is really nice ! Those are black olives and egg (quarter) slices on top with some sort of slightly spicy red pepper shaving. It has a little kick to it too. It 's quite a bit to eat for an appetizer. I ate 3/5 of it. That 's enough. It 's heavy. In their defense, they sent over one of the owners who speaks good English. I explained that I 've been coming here since it was a Japanese buffet in the late 1990 's. The server came over to me and gave me a complementary chicha de jora. Chicha de jora is a corn beer . It 's tasty . Not very strong. Corn beer ? That 's interesting. I am going to try one more appetizer. I have to see this one. It 's called Choritos a la Chalaca which are Callao style mussels, onions , tomatoes and cilantro marinated in a fresh lime juice. OMG This is like an INCH high! The mussels are also HUGE! The dressing on the end is like a limy vinaigrette(it 's a bit sour) but not very oily or salty. These are real good and easy to eat if you like lots of onions with a bit of heat . You just barely taste the mussels. The colors of the dish is not nearly as nice as the one in the menu. Clearly, these appetizers are meant for two people. Still, I finished it.For my entrée, I 'm having the Bisteck a lo Pobre which is a grilled steak served with rice , fries , eggs , sweet plantains and a side salad .I have noticed the food does come out a bit slow so be VERY patient here. Per the server, It 's very big! I 'll say this. All of these plates are! You get your money 's worth here! My only complaint is that the table is sticky. I 've also noticed they don 't take the dirty plates away (the menu, yes, the dirty plates, no). It could be the custom or a new server. For the steak (my first in quite a while), they don 't ask how you want it cooked . I 'm guessing it 's assumed to be cooked a certain way for everybody unless they say otherwise. There is also no complementary bread or anything. Once again, it 's probably traditional. Well, she finally did take the dirty dishes. I 'm assuming that was done to make room for the very big entrée.This plate is big! It 's literally 1 1/2 feet long. The fries are very good . They are part of a lot of dishes here. The rice wedge is good. The [flank] steak is thin so I see why there are no temperature requests. It sits on a bed of fries too. It&a
Awesome food, prices were fair, good portions, service was a little slow but they only had one waitress and she was also taking phone orders, and greeting customers, so she was doing the best she could. But I will go back again.
I had been wanting to try Toby's ever since I saw their ad on Facebook. I planned to get empanadas to go but they didn't have any; I settled on a rice dish which was excellent! There was enough for at least 4 people! The place is large, open, and very clean. They also have a bar. I will definitely be going back to try some other dishes.
I went to this place because it is fairly close to where I live. I enjoy Peruvian food out of most kinds of foods and I like eating at Cora Cora and Piolin. This place is just as good and even makes some of my favorite dishes better. The price during the week is great, right now its just $10 for a appetizer, entree and drink! This will change I'm sure as they get more popular so dont miss out on it now! There full menu has a bunch of good food as well!
