Best coffee we had in three days in Sydney by a wide margin. The service was excellent (the barista and the owner came and chatted to us while we were there). The resident cat is beautiful and well behaved. The cake was great too. Well worth a visit to Edgecliff just for this place, which is a five minute walk from Edgecliff station.
The worst food and even worse service. The middle age female owner treated her staff and customers rudely. The place is a con. They don't serve the whole table at once. plates came out at separate times. you had to ask for milk in the muesli. They only take cash. very poor food and even worse serve.
My recent trip to Sydney was a pleasant surprise, as my experience at French Press restaurant was a complete opposite of the negative "overpriced and rude" review. While staying with friends nearby, we decided to stop by French Press on our walk to Rushcutters Bay. The owner and staff were welcoming, the breakfast dishes were creative, and there were gluten-free options available. I have traveled extensively and in my opinion, this place is a hidden gem. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try.
I passed by the French Press on my way to Popteno (Porteno's pop up restaurant in Woolhara) and made a mental note to check it out for weekend brunch. The night before I Googled it to scope out the menu and came across the 1-star review from the local below. Let me assure you our experience was the complete opposite of the disgruntled customer below which is what compelled me to write this review. Here was our experience:Hubby and I went in on Saturday morning. After we looked through the menu we realised it was cash only so hubby went to ATM at Edgecliff centre. This was after we had placed our coffee order so his coffee arrived before I had a chance to postpone it. When he got back our lovely waitress came back and replaced it before he took a sip out of it. We were both a bit perplexed thinking there was an order mix up and the barista piped up and said he noticed the long black had been siting there so gave hubby a fresh one. We have never had this 4-STAR SERVICE at any cafe ever including some of Sydney's very best! Needless to say we were very impressed and grateful for the extra care. The food arrived beautifully prepared and plated. Everything tasted fresh and healthful. I had the Avocado smash with haloumi and hubby had the full breakfast. Both were generous portions. I tried the coconut almond milk in a flat white and it was a nice twist to the traditional version. The wait staff were great and checked up on our meal including whom I assumed to be the owners (mother and son team). I just can't imagine them treating customers like the reviewer below described. We wished we lived closer to this amazing cafe! Will definitely be back with friends!
I have never been compelled to write a review more than after having breakfast here. Our coffee was forgotten without apology or explanation, the food was very ordinary and served with questionable 'organic sourdough' (soggy Helgas style toast was what was served) and when we wanted to just leave and get our coffee to go we were shocked at the rudeness let alone lack of apology by the owner. My husband was laughed at as we left for asking for lids for our coffee cups! With so many great places to eat in Sydney I can't imagine how these guys stay open. Will never return.
