Frances, as always had a warm welcome for us. The Red Door is blessed to have her as a member of staff as she is the perfect lady for the job, always pleasant, helpful and nothing is too much bother. The setting on a sunny day is idyllic. Our food was tasty, the service was very good and we enjoyed our lunch.
Just back from Sunday lunch with my husband. From we pulled up in the car until we drove away it was faultless. Staff so nice, missed Frances she was on a day off, Peter who is off to pastures new was also missed, did notice many of the old faces (staff members) werent there. The menu was great lots of variety. All 3 courses were a 10 out of 10, flavours were there in abundance you couldn't fault it. Price wise great value. The place was very busy which is great to see sure why wouldn't it when you are served up scrumptious dishes like we had today.
The good: Stunning location and lovely decor. The not so good: The service was a bit hit and miss as staff had to check order more than once. The poor: The food was disappointing. Uninspiring vegetation menu. Why would anyone serve mash potatoes with ravioli? Portions very small considering the cost. Having dined at the location on a few occasions previously, was expecting much better. Hope this is just a one-off poor experience.
I am so disappointed. We went to The Red Door last night for my 50th birthday, there were 12 of us. We go here for our special occasions. The food was nice, the staff were attentive, we got a lovely table, all in all we were having a lovely night. A waitress brought out my birthday cake, asked did we want to cut it, She told us awkwardly there was a charge of €3 per slice to cut it?? So €36 euro to cut 12 slices of a birthday cake? The waitress was obviously mortified, we all picked that up, I really felt sorry for her. The table fell silent as we were all so shocked, finally my sister-in-law said, no don 't worry, we can take it home and cut it , The only positive from this was that we all laughed about it for the rest of the night as it was so ludicrous, and we 're still texting about it this morning.... I want to say that we are in no way mean, we had already paid the bill of almost €600 and left a generous tip, before this happened. I asked to speak to the Manager, She had already gone home, I spoke to the Manager in charge, He was also obviously embarrassed, He said the policy is based on the corkage idea for wine at your wedding, I said I could see that but it still didn 't justify it, it is simply an example of rip-off Ireland . He was at a loss for words. I asked when the policy had been introduced, He said it was there as long as He was, I said we had celebrated my Mother-in-laws 70th birthday there in February '23 and we weren 't charged for it, as if we had we wouldn 't have come back for my 50th, He said He thinks it was introduced in February '23. My point is this 1. if you are going to charge €3 per slice to cut a birthday cake, you should advertise it, I don 't see it anywhere on your menus or website, I assume you know if you advertise this charge, you will lose bookings. You should notify the party that if they want a cake at their celebration, they will be charged €3 per slice to get it cut... and watch your bookings fall away.... 2. You actually lost sales last night as I had already asked the waitress could we get more tea coffee with the cake, I am guessing €5 per head? we also cancelled that when we discovered we couldn 't get our cake cut, we would probably have had another drink, possibly €100, but we left and went home to have our cake and another drink, therefore you lost sales last night of approx €150 due to your ludicrous cake-cutting policy 3. You have lost any future bookings from our group of 12 and I would imagine their friends as, without exception, we said we wouldn 't come back to a venue who applies extortionate charges like this, we think its actually offensive. My mother 's 80th birthday and my husband 's 50th birthday are coming up but we wont be coming to the Red Door. There are many lovely restaurants in Donegal who actually give the birthday girl/boy a free drink or dessert, not rip them off to cut their birthday cake. Be aware that what we are all talking laughing about today, and what we will talk about to our friends in the future, is the rip-off cake cutting charge at The Red Door, not the lovely meal we had, the lovely staff and the lovely location. It doesn 't seem like a good marketing tool to me.....
