The exterior does not scream stop here and eat! but just keep walking in. Trust me. We walked in just at the start of a rush. Who would 've guessed that on a Wednesday night there would be a mad rush for tamales, but that apparently was the case. No one actually verbally acknowledged us, and it did make us feel a bit nervous about being in the middle of nowhere. Eventually we were given menus, and the waitress apologized for needing some time to get to us. When she did get to us she was patient with some of our indecision and questions. We weren 't starving, otherwise we would 've gotten cranky. The food arrived hot and delicious. The tamales were delicious. A previous review called them massive but they were of average size but above average taste. The bison tamale smothered in red chili was my favorite, and my husband ordered a bison burrito smothered in red chili, also delicious. The only disappointment was learning they did not have any frozen tamales available for us to take with, and the wait for cold tamales would 've been too long since they were making them to-order and the place was full by the time we were ready to call it a night. I suppose if we had not been so tired from rafting and zip lining earlier in the day we would 've considered bowling because what says Mexican food like bowling before or after dinner!
Favorite place in Fairplay! Love Tamales, love the local feel. Get the Gluten free Buffalo Tamales smothered with Buffalo chili... Yum!!
We've vacationed in Telluride, CO, once or twice a year for 16 years, and when we go out we make a point of heading to Dorothy's. We originally started going there when our kids told us about how great the tamales were. They attended an outdoors camp in Florissant for 5 weeks every summer and would stop at Dorothy's for lunch on their way back from hiking the local 14-ers. We would fly into Colorado Springs when camp ended, pick the kids up, and head by car to Telluride, stopping at Dorothy's along the way. We've only had the tamales there, but they are excellent. They are moist and flavorful, and she usually has some stashed in the freezer if you want some to take along with you. When we first went to her place it was in Hartsel, Co, and she did business out of a huge semi truck trailer. We were wary, but our boys pleaded with us to stop and eat. She recently moved to Fairplay, where she shares space with her husband's bowling lanes. If you like tamales, be sure to try hers. They are delicious.
Good for a breakfast stop on the way to the Collegiate Peaks! We shared the breakfast burrito and it was great. Large and hearty, it had eggs, chorizo, tator tots and cheese. It was perfect for sharing and I would say it was better than I expected! Other tables around us were munching on pancakes and chicken fried steak everything looked good. So while I can't speak for whether these tamales are authentic, I can say it's a decent breakfast stop.
In August 2018, Dorothy’s Tamales began operating out of KB's Kakery, located at 331 US Hwy 285 B, Fairplay, CO 80440 (719-838-2533). It’s conveniently situated across from and next to Prather’s grocery store. Dorothy's tamales are just as exceptional as ever, featuring a wonderfully smooth masa/corn wrap filled with flavorful red and green chili. The balance between the two fillings is excellent. They are definitely worth seeking out! Plus, you can now enjoy pastries from KB's Kakery as an added bonus. It's a fantastic combination for a breakfast pastry, and you can order some tamales to take with you for lunch during your hikes or skiing adventures in the area. Be sure to check out their new website, kbskakeryanddorothystamales, for more information!
