Had my annual mammogram today. It took less than 30 min total and I got a couple door prizes!!
I advise tourists and islanders to stay away from the clinic here unless they have a true medical emergency and/or platinum insurance coverage. If you need something simple like an antibiotic, it would be MUCH better to call your primary physician back home and try to have an order phoned in to the pharmacy, if you don't need to be seen in person. My background: I have spent a lot of time on San Juan Island as a visitor. I had a good experience at the Peace Island ER once, but my specific advice against using the clinic stems from an experience I had after pricking my finger on a blackberry bush. It was red swollen, and I pretty clearly needed a basic antibiotic, but had switched insurance temporarily and so was not able to call home for a prescription. I made an appointment at the Peace Island clinic, thinking that the clinic would not be too pricey, but I was very wrong. The clinician ended up ordering lab work to the tune of $284 (for a pricked finger!!!!! without checking in with me first, as most doctors' offices would do, and then of course there were the other fees associated with the visit. I ended up stuck with most of this amount because of deductibles, but I would have been offended by the excessive nature of the charge in any event. The financial agents were really unhelpful when I called in to contest the charges. Please DON'T assume that the clinic will be affordable; I imagine many of the charges are higher on the island than on the mainland.
We have had a vacation home on the island for 4 years and fortunately have not had a need to see a Dr until this summer and have been in twice now. The first time I called the week of the Fourth of July for my 4 year old whom had an eye infection. The staff was amazing and although there were not any appointment that day they squeezed him in. Everyone was so friendly and the woman at the reception desk showed my son where there was a book station that was donated to read books and then he got to bring one home. The Dr made him feel comfortable And made him laugh. Overall experience excellent that day. We also had to run my mother in law into the ER this weekend for an infection and I could not believe how friendly the staff, nurses, and Doctors were. Truly professionals that were there to care for the patient. We were in and out in a jiff but not before the Dr.s made sure she did not have any other questions or concerns. The facility is new and immaculate. So glad to have this here just in case.
Friendly and quick service. And the most amazing turkey club ever!! So fresh and delicious! My husband kept saying wow. Absolutely loved it!
