Uva At The Vine - Funchal

Great food, fantastic wines and helpful staff. One thing... while eating outside between inside and the poolbar we were between 2 different kinds of music, that was a bit irritating!

The UVA restaurant is located in the Vine hotel in central Funchal. On the top floor you benefit from fantastic views across the city, especially at night. There is also a nice bar to enjoy a cocktail before you go in for dinner. The restaurant itself is slick and modern but these larger hotel restaurants can be lacking in the atmosphere generated by their smaller counterparts. The food offer is what you would expect although the night we visited several fish dishes were unavailable. My main was chicken based, with half cooked Asian style and the other half tandoori. You are probably thinking that these two flavours would not compliment each other…..……,,you would be right, and to add insult to injury there was no rice side dish available so mashed potatoes had to do. The Asian dish was actually very tasty and worthy of its own place on the menu (with rice). The tandoori offer was dry and lacked any inkling of Indian seasoning. The mashed potato was a complete mismatch and simply did not belong on the same plate. To be fair this was a side dish ordered by me but it was, in my defence, in the absence of anything else. On a positive note we did enjoy a very nice bottle of wine. To end the night we ordered two coffees and two of the most expensive brandies on the menu (27 euros each). Guess what, they only had enough brandy for one glass, which my wife took……… maybe that’s why I am so grumpy!!!! I don’t think this is necessarily a bad restaurant but this was the poorest experience of our 14 day holiday, give this a miss there are much better options in Funchal.

We had a great experience at Uva. There are extensive options for wine by the glass. The food is fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Though there weren’t any vegetarian entrees on the menu, the chef put together the perfect meal for me.

Great little local cafe in the shopping centre. Cafe styled food. The food we ordered did take a bit of time to get brought to our table, and each dish came out one at a time. The toasties could of been cooked a bit longer but otherwise tasted ok. The server was polite, prompt and well presented and he did give us complimentary ponchas after our meal, which surprisingly was one of the best we have had in Funchal. There are toilets available for customers.

Ótimo pequeno café local no centro comercial. Comida estilo café. A comida que pedimos demorou um pouco para chegar à nossa mesa, e cada prato saiu um de cada vez. As torradas poderiam ter sido cozidas um pouco mais, mas por outro lado tinham um sabor ok. O servidor foi educado, rápido e bem apresentado e ele nos deu ponchas de cortesia após a refeição, que surpreendentemente foi uma das melhores que tivemos no Funchal. Existem banheiros disponíveis para os clientes.
