When standing outside the establishment I thought that it would be a basic cafe that would sell basic food. Oh how I was wrong! Stepping through the welcoming door I was hit immediately with the heavenly homely smell (which put my nerves at ease). On first impressions I thought the dining area was small but cosy. The tables were set out for a group of four or three to sit and enjoy a quiet meal together. The table cloths had a retro look to them which followed the retro theme of the pictures hanging upon the warm colour of the walls. The chairs were relatively comfortable and almost vintage following the retro feel. Every table had an array of sauces for each customers ' picky preferences (I 'm a tomato sauce kinda girl). Upon arrival we were greeted with a cheeky smile by the amiable owner Derek which made everyone feel as though they were a regular customer just popping in to order their usual. Once we had chosen our seats and we were settled, Derek came over and asked each person what they would like to order, his cheerful disposition was reflected in everyone which created a comfortable atmosphere. I had ordered the 'Bacon and Egg sandwich ' which is a favourite breakfast food of mine. I was curious to see if the mighty Derek 's sarnies could beat the bacon and egg sandwich from a takeaway bakery just up the road. Whilst waiting for our food we were served our drinks, I had chosen Coca cola. I was pleased to see that Derek sells his drinks in cans which in my opinion any drink that is sold in a can tastes automatically better than if it were in a bottle. I opened my can and after hearing that satisfying 'tsss ' I took a sip. The cool drink tingled my tongue before running down my throat, refreshing! The wait for our food was surprisingly short, I was very impressed. Derek hand served each meal to every customer which I think is important as is develops the relationship between the owner and the customer. When my meal was placed in front of me, again, I was pleasantly surprised. The size of the bun was larger than my hand! I opened up what seemed like a treasure chest and saw the yellow gold. JACKPOT! The oozing yolk from my egg had been spread all around the crispy bacon and buttered bun. Absolute perfection.I grabbed the tomato sauce eagerly and spiralled it around until the perfect amount was applied. I picked up the whole sandwich (which was actually quite heavy.. for a sandwich) and took a bite. A mix of tomato sauce and egg yolk dribbled down my top and landed on my jeans. Did I care? I most certainly did not. The combination of all the flavours and textures: salty bacon, fried egg, creamy butter and soft white bread worked extremely well. The egg was not overcooked so the yolk remained runny and the bacon was not chewy. My plate was cleared within minutes. Bite after bite the flavour continued to delight my taste buds. Once my plate was cleared Derek came to collect it to avoid the table becoming too crowded. Derek then returned to the table and presented me with a lemonade ice pole. I admit I was shocked as it was completely unexpected. I accepted what I assume was treat and began to consume it. The sweet, frozen ice cooled my palate and acted almost like a sorbet. It was a perfect end to a perfect experience. Thank you Derek for your fantastic service and food.
You know if you'll enjoy an establishment when you receive that warm, family friendly tone. The Crescent Cafe in Dunston offers great food, great service and a happy owner, friendly enough for a chat. The menu is extremely large, and I don't mean the choice of food. The whole back wall is covered in different meals and drinks you can order, written in chalk for that warm, pub feel. After receiving the food, with little wait, we enjoyed tucking into the full English, piping hot and larger than I expected. We traveled there as a class, so conversation was flowing as the food was sizzling in the kitchen. For the service being only done by one man for around 10 people, it was definitely to be admired. I absolutely loved the food, service and had an amazing time with my class.
When we arrived it had a very welcome tone to it. This was accompanied by a very nice welcome by the owner. We proceeded to sit down and were asked what we would like to eat. There was a very friendly mood like we were usuals and go into the cafe every week as we were ordering. It was not a long wait at all for our food but even if it was longer it wouldn't of been bad because everyone was chatting away and there was a lot of comfort throughout the whole trip of being there. When the food did come out I was most definitely not disappointed even though I am not a picky eater I know when I am eating top quality food and this was the case. I had a wonderful sausage sandwich in front of me and not once did I think about leaving any on the plate. Everything from the actual sausage to the bun. Even after finishing the sandwich I just felt like sitting there and embracing the atmosphere. What made the stay even better was the fact we got free ice pops. Now some people might think this is a pointless thing to write about but I think it was a nice gesture which topped of a great visit at the Crescent Cafe. Kelsey
