A lot of people assume that Poutine is easy, I mean you put some fries and cheese curds in a container and pour gravy on it, I mean how hard can it be? The answer is that it is not that simple and there is no other fast food item that I can think of where the quality of each ingredient can have such a large effect on the whole experience and Patate Dorée have perfected the 3 pillars of the classic Québecois Poutine. First pillar, the fries. These are very subjective, but you don't want them too soft. Doree's fries are perfectly crispy, but not too hard, and also a nice golden brown colour, cooked enough to have flavor but not over and under-cooked, perfect poutine-fries. It seems as though the cooking oil they use is really good, as they are really flavourful.Second pillar, the curds. As long as you are using proper curds this is probably the least fickle ingredient. Preferably you use smaller, firmer curds so that they don't melt when you pour the hot gravy on, you really want them to keep their shape when eating, and Doree's are perfect for this as even at the bottom of the container they were still intact. which is what you want to see. Third Pillar, the gravy. This is really a make or break ingredient. Too think and you end up with a hardened pile of goop, while too runny will produce something akin to French fry soup, there is also an aspect of qualtity too, you want enough to cover the ingredients, but not so much as to smother everything. Doree have gotten the consistency down perfect. It's a nice and liquid without being too runny, and they put the perfect amount on. There is also a question of flavor, you want gravy that is more than just hot brown liquid, you want a good beefy taste to it with a bit of spices but without overwhelming, Doree's strikes a perfect balance.I also had a pogo, which was nice and tasty but it's hard to mess up a pogo. The ladies who run Doree may seem a bit gruff, but they are really nice and really quick so there is no complaint there. If you are looking for a classic poutine (not something fancy with extra ingredients), Doree has the best one in the NCR (National Capital Region for the non-government types.
Awesome poutine!. It was one of the best that I had in Ottawa. It's a really small place and the service is sub-par, but the poutine makes up for it. Definitely a hidden gem! I will definitely be coming to this place for another poutine.
This is a neighborhood restaurant that I have been visiting since I was a child. This was my first visit in the past 10 years, and not much has changed except for the fact that Rachel, who had been working there for over 40 years, has retired. The menu still includes classic dishes like poutine, burgers, and hot dogs. However, I noticed that the fries didn't taste as good as they used to. The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly. The restaurant could use a fresh coat of paint and a thorough cleaning, but overall, it is still very good.
Reminds me of the greasy burger joints of my youth. Food is great!
