I am privileged to be able to do most of my food shopping at Willimantic Food Co-op in Willi, at Fiddleheads Food Co-op in New London, and at FoodWorks in Old Saybrook. I have been a grateful member of Willi since 1996. Before around 2012 when Fiddleheads began carrying exclusively OG produce, I did on rare occasions shop at the Glastonbury HardlyWholeFoods. Yesterday, after my 11-year-absence, I returned to the Glastonbury store as I was in the neighborhood. During that interim, WF was bought out by Amazon, and accordingly the food quality has very visibly been dumbed down. Agreed, a supermarket shopping experience dims to that of small marketplaces, but when I previously had shopped here I still felt appreciation for its carrying foods with some semblance of wholesomeness and naturalness about them. No longer. Conventional produce outnumbers those organically grown. Totally white-flour bakery products far exceed those with at least some small percentage of whole grains. Sugar- and salt-laden nonfoods are the norm, not the anomaly. And locavores beware, because WF defines “local” sources as within 400 miles. While some advertised items at WF cost less than elsewhere, and lesser still for members of Amazon Prime, that just provides me yet another incentive for never having enrolled in Prime. The food shopping experience is one of my life’s pleasures, but my visit to WF left me feeling disappointed and exhausted. Among other supermarkets in my corner of Connecticut, Big Y stands out for the quality of its OG produce and for its wide selection of “health foods.” I am glad to have skipped WF all these years and instead to have stayed closer to home. Hence, in regards to reasons for shopping at WF, I am left only with one big question, one Big Why.
Overall it's a very good place to shop for healthy stuff, like the shop is very clean and the staff are very nice and friendly.
Like all whole foods market, propose some of the best stuff you can feed your body with without destroying the planet. Salad bar is not Amazing in this specific location and a lot of organic and not organic are mixed up in the veggies and fruits section so check stickers rather than boards, There is vegan pizza and some vegan dishes though and enough to make your lunch healthy and colorful. Neighborhood is nice
Whole Foods is the wave of the future. It is a national market chain that carries a lot of organic foods and quite a bit of local produce. It is a little more expensive that most stores but well worth the convenience. My one wish is that they carried more prepared raw dishes as I am a raw foodist. Oh well, maybe sometime in the future they will do this.
Whole Foods represents the future of grocery shopping. This national chain offers a wide selection of organic products, along with some local goods. While prices are generally higher than at most other stores, the quality and comfort make it worthwhile. As a raw nutritionist, I do wish they offered more prepared raw dishes, but perhaps they'll expand their offerings in the future.
