I had dinner there the other night in the dining area. I purchased 1 chef's choice and 1 off the menu. with the open fire, its nice a warm. the waiting time for the meal was not long at all. worth a second visit.
This pub was quite well patronised when we visited on an autumnal Thursday night. The patrons were an unusual bunch, like a throwback to the Melbourne of the 1970s. There were a few professionals in office attire dining though at 1930 hours.Drinks were moderately priced for a licensed venue while my companion's chicken parma and my Balaclava burger (which included bacon and egg) were both excellent, each coming with chips and in the case of the parma, also with salad. The NZ Maori girl serving us lacked a smile and was a trifle perfunctory but the young man at the bistro with her was friendlier. They have specials on about five nights a week as well as live music at times. The dessert range was poor with only three cakes on display. The number 3/3A, 16 and 78 trams are within 70 metres so access from anywhere in Melbourne is easy; Balaclava railway station on the Sandringham line is about 150 metres away. This is a Woolworths/ Bruce Mathieson group pub and in the end I was surprised by the quality of the meals. Worth a visit.
Before I understood what a good pub was in Melbourne I found myself wandering along Carlisle street and wandered into this place, knowing that I would get a decent price for a drink (and a meal). That first time it was okay, but coming back again a couple of more times I have to admit that I wasn't all that thrilled with the place. It is basically just a simply pub with nothing all that fantastic about it - pokies room, sports bar, bistro. Okay, you do get some interesting characters wandering through here, but other than that I would probably look for some place else to have a meal, or a drink.
Menu has got smaller over the last few months - but they do have daily specials. No matter what you have it is served with salad (not very good) and chips or horrible undercooked steamed vegetables
