We are locals and have been to Hutong a lot and normally enjoy it, but their special Chinese New Year was a disappintment. The Lion Dance was great fun but the rest was not. They had crammed people into the back room but did not have a sufficient number of servers to manage it. Our table did not even have the basic condiments on it and when we asked we were told they didn 't have enough to go round. So no soy or vinegar bottles in a Chinese restaurant?!! Our dumplings sat there while we waited and waited, and they eventually brought some sauce in large bowls but by then the dumplings were stone cold. Service was super slow, drinks took forever 15 minutes just to get water. It seemed to us like CNY was an excuse to pack the people in, and make more money but to the expense of the quailty of food and service.
Good quality food had cantonese style sweet and sour pork but they serve the famous Beijing duck recipe and many others licensed like most restaurants now. cooked nicely and authentic style
We were a little concerned about the recent negative reviews on customer service however as we were staying in The Cullen we decided to give it a go. The service was lovely. The menu has a great range and the food we ordered salt and pepper squid, honey chicken and pork dumplings was so fresh, hot and full of flavour. I really do recommend this restaurant.
Been to Hu Tongs several times over the years and was always great. Not any more. When we walked in there was no greeting, indeed the staff looked shocked that members of the public had entered their place of business; instead of a hello we got a yes? . Ordered our food and one of the dishes simply never turned up. I told my wife that I 100% guarantee they 'll still try to charge for it though, and yup, I wasn 't wrong. When I challenged the appearance of the non existent dish on the bill the waiter walked off, had a conversation with someone and just plonked down a new bill. No sorry or apologies or any variation thereof. The highlight was in paying for some off the worst, most disinterested service we 've had for a long time, was being asked if I want to include a tip. I do actually, if you hate working in customer service so much then quit. There 's a tip. Will not be returning.
