The Short Story Brasserie - Granville

The wine cellar located below this restaurant used to be one of my favorite spots (we visited weekly and I bought several cases of wine there during the holidays). Frustrated with the server and the experience, we decided to skip dinner altogether. As we were leaving, we noticed the owner sitting at the bar. We explained that we were leaving because I have a food allergy, and that the chef refused to accommodate my menu choices or prepare any gluten-free dishes. The owner just stared as we walked out. It’s disheartening to want to support local businesses and yet leave disappointed. I understand that my gluten-free diet can pose a challenge for many chefs and restaurants; that’s why I choose my dining options carefully and call ahead to ensure they can accommodate me.

The menu features an array of intriguing and eclectic options. I started my meal with a Havana Mojito alongside smoked salmon and crostini, followed by a spicy chicken and rice noodle salad that delivered a wonderful blend of sweet and spicy flavors. Next, I had the Chevre cheese and tomato tart drizzled with basil oil, which was excellent and only slightly different from my own recipe due to the choice of cheese. For my main course, I chose the Choucroute garnie, which included smoked pork, sausage, and herbed potatoes. While the dish was exceptional with the addition of piquant sauerkraut, it was a delight. To finish, I indulged in a chocolate cake with caramel and sauce anglaise, perfectly paired with the recommended Blandy’s 10-year Malmsey Madeira. This pairing was sublime, featuring a harmonious balance of sharp, sweet, nutty, and salty notes that were both cool and smooth. I can’t recall the last time I enjoyed a dining experience as much as this one. I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning for more unforgettable culinary adventures.
