I came here once, and I have to say this small town restaurant, located in downtown Tapalpa is just EXCELENT. Food is very traditional and simple at the same time but the taste is so great. After the first time time we tried not only dinner but lunch and breakfast as well. The great location, good view (directly to the historic church and park) make this place a wonderful choice to come and eat anytime.
My daughter and I got a recommendation for Paulina's on our first night in Tapalpa. This eatery is up a narrow set of stairs and some tables have a great view of the square below. There is an outside deck which houses most of the seats. There was a wait for dinner, so we sat on a bench at ground level close to the square and awaited our "call".Dinner was worth the wait. We had enchiladas with chicken, beans and a very piquant hot sauce. Delicious and very reasonably priced. Our server was helpful to explain the ingredients. We know why this restaurant is the choice for many locals!
We went to Paulino's intent on having tamales and enjoyed every tasty bite. They were baked in a single serving terra cotta dish and smothered in fresh sour cream and melted cheese. To add to the experience, we sat on the first floor patio of a converted hacienda and savoured the view of the main square and cathedral at sunset. I would definitely go back to Paulino's!
Just across the church, but I think it is called Paulinos.... the kale tamales (tamales de acelga) are the best. There are mostly kale with some cheese in the centre... I hope to bring some home for the freezer on the next visit here.
