Salt flakes added to the yummy fish, with a batter that was crispy and not overly thick. The crayfish salad was pretty delicious too! And the mussels were fresh, they paired well with the provided bread! If you’re considering a drive along the West Coast, this is a good stop to add to your list! Do bring some fly repellent though.
One of the reasons NZ travel is so fun. The Craypot serves fresh, local fare in a charming, cozy seaside setting. Preparation of simple dishes is flawless, and fresh flavors come shining through.
Found this place while searching for a place to eat near Haast. Very good fish and chips, crispy outer without tasting oily and good soft fish inside. I think it was cod. I enjoyed it with a table sauvignon blanc. I also ordered the seafood platter and the mussels, which I found to be ok, but not like the fish and chips. The service here is also very good, friendly and responsive. And of cos, it was really nice eating good fish and chips by the sea/ocean. P.s. it is actually quite far from Haast even though I didn't regret making the trip there it in hindsight.
I cannot recommend the Craypot highly enough, what an absolute gem of a place! We were recommended to come here by a friend, and it did not disappoint. Lovely location, a little scenic drive to get there from Haast, and relaxed atmosphere. Being veggie, and travelling around the New Zealand countryside for the past 3 weeks I had struggled to find suitable food with much variety but the Halloumi salad I had here was *chefs kiss*
By far one of the best fish and chips I have ever had in my life. The fish of the day was fresh as it can be and the chips were thick and crispy. Totally worth the drive from Haast and very warmly recommended. There's a very nice and short Bush walk starting nearby too. Another reason to pay this place a visit.
