We stayed at Down Hall with my family and had dinner twice at The Grill. The food was lovely (so much so that we ended up ordering the same starters the second evening, as they were delicious) and the service was impeccable. The gentleman who suggested the wines was very attentive and remembered our choices the next evening. All in all, a very pleasant experience.
The place is super beautiful. The service was great and the food really nice. If anything a bit pricy the drinks. The rest is great
Decided to ignore the negative reviews and give it a try for a catch-up meal with my daughter, we should have avoided as the meal was ruined by poor service. Menu was very limited. The restaurant was only a third full. The waitress seated us then completely ignored us for about 10 minutes. Had to ask if we could order our drinks, bread basket and main meals. Bread came fast but drinks took about 10 mins to arrive and the food service took about 30 mins, which is far too long. They served my daughter the wrong meal, took 10-15 mins to replace with what she had ordered by which time I had finished my meal. The waitress asked if we wanted another drink on the house, I informed her that I had already ordered a second drink about 10 mins prior and still not received it! Drinks and one main removed from the bill. Two other tables also complained while we were waiting for our meals. Food was actually a 7/10 once it arrived.
Huge fan of the hotel. Simply a stunning venue that we didn't take full advantage of. Price: I don't know why this has 4 dollar signs. We went economical through a 3rd party booking agency and it came out to about $125USD/night. By far one of the better decisions all trip. For the price alone this should be a 5 Yelp star hotel. Sure it's an hour and a half outside of London but transportation was easy. I'll get to that later. Room: We were given a great spot overlooking the entrance. It was a great view. Size wise it was bigger than expected with little added amenities that were extremely thoughtful (think heated towel rack and bath robes). Transportation. It's easy. We didn't have a car but... 1. A short taxi ride to Sawbridgeworth Train Station was $13USD each way and... 2. A Day Pass (for the overground/train, the underground/The Tube, and the buses) was about $40 USD/person each day. Transportation runs until midnight each night and was surprisingly easy (save for a 3 hour delay on the train when it broke down one night). Go to Sawbridgeworth instead of Bishop Stortford to save $8USD per taxi ride. Leave after 9:45am (peak time) to get cheaper Day Passes Staff: Very good. Had a few hiccups but it's expected. I was also told by one chap that I could use a microwave to heat up some pizza (it was 1am) while another chap firmly put him down and said that microwave use was not allowed. Awkward exchange right there but the night audit's job is tough to begin with. Note: Local calls from your hotel room aren't free. Had to learn this upon checkout but no biggie. Buy a SIM for your unlocked phone and use it.
