Price: 5/5- 16 dumplings for $10.80? Yes please! Service: 1.5/5- I was greeted with WHAT DO YA WANT!!! And GET YO FOOD! . Ambiance: 2/5- it 's your basic canteen/ takeaway joint, located in Dixon House. Don 't have expectations.
I found this place after scouring China Town for some cheap steamed project buns (these were $6.50/3). On average they were ok. The BBQ pork is the standout component with the bun leaving much to be desired. One had been prepared so poorly that it had a crunchy crown; a no go for a steamed pork bun IMO.
I love dumplings soooo much, so when I go to Dixon House this is my go-to place. I usually order dumplings on their own but tonight I got dumpling soup $10.80) FACTS: service is minimal but prompt. They prepare dumplings freshly from what I've seen so there will likely be a 10+ minute wait. The prices are good considering portions, there are lots of affordable options. Get some dumplings to takeaway and it's an easy warm snack to go while walking around the area. PERSONAL TASTE: the soup was very vinegary which isn't so much my thing, but somehow addictive. The dumplings themselves are simple as in basic/standard fillings), and great both steamed and fried, especially pork and chive.
Back in the day, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and Hunters Collectors the airwaves, this was a favorite food court stop for handmade noodles. So when I saw that the handmade noodles were still being served up from the very same spot, I was all agog to try them. In fact, it was as though I had stepped into a time machine. The same stretchy chewy noodles that I remember, served with a well flavoured sauce, generous amounts of tender cumin coated lamb and bitey chinese greens. At $9 this was a satisfying and filling meal that still hits the right notes, all these years later.
