The ship they have is 34 years old, and used to operate Helsinki Stockholm route in its better days. Despite the renovations the age of the ship shows. Service on the ship is completely disorganized, and the crew and service personnel speak just basic English. Embarkation/disembarkation process, as well as customs and border formalities takes about 2 hours. On the plus side the Baltic sea is beautiful and can 't be ruined even by a horrible cruise ship experience.
Ticket doesn't include wifi, no hair dryer (with a deposit you can borrow for 2 hours only), smaller room than other lines, dated rooms. On the other hand, staff at the counter found me a discount without me asking and reissued my ticket to include breakfast at no additional cost.
Horrible experience on the M/s princess Anastasia to St Petersburg. The buffet is 30 euros, the new York city restaurant has reasonable prices and good food but it was totally booked full and the Italian place has awful food and we waited 3 hours for pizzas. Breakfast is only until 10 and while you cant leave the boat until 14, you have to leave the cabin before 9.30 and theres only one café open. On the way back, we got on the boat at 13 and you have to wait for hours until any shop opens. Luckily we could eat at the new York restaurant because we were the first ones when it opened. Bring your own food and drinks for the whole trip!! Or get the visa, its worth it. On the way back we decided to dance for a few hours in the club, but I left really early since people could just smoke in there, it was disgusting. Also customer service is nonexistent. There is no chicken on the menu then what did I just eat?! Go get the menu excuse me? Also no WiFi, it was 5 euros. Even the ship to Tallinn has free WiFi and thats only a couple of hours! And staff does not communicate. You could pay at the bar um no the bar closed and we had to pay here. The only kinda nice thing about the trip was the entertainment, which we missed on the way to Russia because of the waiting for our food.
We had a wonderful crossing from Helsinki to St Petersburg. We had a car and it was very easy to drive on and off as there were very few cars on board. The ship is large and well maintained. We ate at the nicest restaurant, New York, and the food was excellent. We did make a reservation, however I don't think we would have needed to as the ship was not very full. Our cabin was nice and clean. We were very pleased with the whole experience and would travel again on St Peter.
St Petersburg to Helsinki cruise was very good. The most negative aspect was the check in process, however I have seen worse at airports. There was a good variety of food on board. The food I sampled was good and reasonably priced. Overall not a bad option for combining the cost of lodging and transportation.
