Located a bit outside the centre on the Katajannokka island, we probably would never had found Johan Nyström 's without a tipp by a friendly blogger. As my hubby is a total cakeaholic, we wanted to test J N despite only having 24 hour stay in Helsinki. Within those 24 hours we ended up going there twice, so that should say it all. Best coffee (latte) I have ever drunk outside Ethiopia. They mix rost their own coffee daily. Soymilk available! All the cakes are raw vegan. With 6-7 choices daily we were already slightly overwhelmed. Ended up trying Snickers , sea-buckthorn-cheesecake and lingonberry-cheesecake. Everything was delicisious, and although the slices seemed quite small (for my German hubby), through their heavy structure they actually had the exact right size. Pricing was ok for Finland. In the summer you can sit outside and enjoy the seaview. And if you liked your coffee very much, as this actually is a roastery, you can take it with you home! J N also sell tees in dozens of varieties.
I had the raw flower cauliflower salad with a tofu hummus €11 and a very small icy €4. the salat was the only choice at that time, they had raw cake, but I did not try as everyone places them all has about 6-7 €. if they like coffee, it is worth visiting and has a beautiful seafront outside sitting area.
A cappucino and a croissant nearly 10 euros. For the price I would expect the barista to bring the coffee to especially when the cafe is half empty and there would be a lot of time to fo that. Feels like they lack the attitude. Johan Nyström used to have great coffee and customer service. Now they have just great coffee. Which is not enough fir the pretty excessive pricing.
Came in on two occasions because it's next door to my hotel room and I love tea. The tea is fine but both times that I came the staff has been rude. First time was a blonde, she was very cold and was fairly deliberately unhelpful when I asked questions. When I came back the second time, I looked in first to make sure it was not her to my pleasant surprise it wasn't, so I tried again but got a brunette this time who ended up being even worse! No courtesy, wouldn't make eye contact when talking to me, rolled her eyes when I asked for anything, and was giving side glances and scowling over at my table. The thing is, they acted normal and nice towards all of the others patrons so my first instinct is to assume maybe they are unfriendly towards Americans? I don't know but i've been in Finland for a week and haven't been treated like this anywhere else. So only come here if you're a glutton for punishment.
