I live here and have visited this place several times, when I couldn't get In to laggan bothy, which is outstanding, but each time it's been a very unwelcoming feeling, coffee is awful so bitter, cakes are either dry or wet and sloopy, they are not home made they are bought in. Never feel welcome, so as I'm a local I'm telling you don't bother with this awful place, go a wee bit down the road opposite the church and go to the laggan bothy, a warm welcome, a African grey parrot named kata, good food and lovely gifts, pictures so on.
We enjoyed a fantastic cup of tea and scones at this charming coffee/tea room on our way back from the Isle of Skye. The modern dining conservatory offered a peaceful setting with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The gift shop had a variety of locally made products and crafted goods. Highly recommended! Located just a few minutes outside of Dalwhinnie on the Old Military Road, we would definitely make a return visit when in the area again.
One of my favorite cafes has unfortunately declined in quality recently! They have lost their star baker, and now the soup comes in smaller bowls. The cost of running a cafe must be high these days. However, I was disappointed to see that the cake selection mostly consists of gluten-free or vegan options. Why cater to a minority when the majority of people don't require these options? The girl owner told me that they taste the same, but I disagree - nothing beats quality ingredients like butter and chocolate. I tried the carrot cake, which used to be one of the best, but it was awful. When I asked about the change in recipe, I found out that the baker had left and the owner had tried a new recipe. I am so disappointed in this once great cafe.
After a long drive, we decided to stop for coffee and dessert. The restaurant is conveniently located and easy to access from the main road. The owner and staff were friendly and prepared a custom coffee for us. The desserts were tasty and we savored them while admiring a field of cows and beautiful mountains in the distance. It was a delightful surprise on our journey!
