If you're in Highland, IL you need to stop at Schlafly. If you've been to their other brew pubs in downtown St. Louis or Maplewood, you'll be impressed by the completely different menu. The theme of the menu here is Swiss German fare to pay homage to the original Swiss German Schlafly family immigrants that settled in Highland, IL in the 1800s. We were stopping in for an early lunch, so we only ordered one appetizer to share. We enjoyed the fondue with local cheeses, apples, sausage, and bread. The cheese was perfectly melted. The skewers to dip the apples and sausage were sturdy. We didn't lose any food in the sea of cheese! The crostini was the perfect level of toasted. Not too hard, not too soft, just right. The patio is gorgeous! It's covered and there are fans to keep you cool when it's warm. It overlooks a small green space. I can see kids running around here while their parents sip some beers. There's even an additional outdoor bathroom in the small park, too. They have the Highland Lager available only at this location, so make sure to grab a pint when you visit!
We had the pretzle appetizer with the cheese sauce. The pretzles were average, the cheese sauce was not good. I had to get some mustard to go with the pretzels. Any cheese sauce I've ever had (ballpark, carnival, etc) was better than this. My wife ordered the Shepard's Pie which was flavorless. Extremely bland and needed salt/pepper to make it edible. I had the fish and fries. The fish was rubbery and the batter was flavorless. No seasoning at all. The fries were a greasy pile of potatos. At least they had some flavor. This is my 2nd time here...I do not recommend.
Food was just okay and it was a very expensive meal. Service was good. Something notable I thought was strange was there were no TVs indoors In the case you wanted to catch a game and have some drinks. In my opinion this place would thrive if it had killer wings (no wings on the menu) and TVs indoors
We enjoyed a shared flight and then a glass each. All the beers were excellent! The pork skin and dipping sauce were amazing! We've tried several breweries in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa, this was top notch!
