Tired of overpriced brunches that serve the same food over and over and over again? Come to blacksalt. I think I would classify it as an upgraded brunch, inspired by Indian flavors, with a few updates India continent classics like hoppers and dilla. Food’s really good familiar enough to still feel like brunch, but with a twist that feels like you’re having something different and slightly justifies paying 160hkd for it. The Instagram darling that is the pancakes looks great, but didn’t appeal it was waaaaaayyy too sweet. Bacon is amazing. Preferred the previous location. Good for: something different for brunch, modern Indian continent flavors
This is a new Sri Lankan/Indian restaurant located in Sai Ying Pun. It's close to a fusion of the two cuisines. The restaurant is slightly hidden in a small alley at the top of the hill. It was difficult to call in a reservation, so I went directly to the restaurant to make my reservation. Overall, the quality is really high. The dishes are delicious, and you can tell they use good ingredients. Their featured dish is the roast chicken curry, which was good, but not what I can call spectacular. The naan was really soft and moist, and it was a perfect combination when dipped in the curry. What really impressed me was the Maldivian Banana Fritters from their dessert menu. You can get this wonderful treat for just 58HKD! The handmade dough it deep fried and topped with a handmade sauce. The whole preparation is done right in front of you! I still can't believe that this dessert was only 58HKD. I really enjoyed everything I had so I hope to try some of their other dishes next time...since I know I'll be back!
The first time we went, we arrived before 7 to an empty place. Unfortunately, they said they were fully booked and couldn't seat us even if we said we'd only quickly eat then leave. Ended up eating at a great place across the road, finished dinner and blacksalt never sat anyone when we left around 815 from the other place. We came back, armed with a reservation this time. We received a complimentary app of papadum with lentils which were great. Ended up ordering paneer (awesome), roti with pulled chicken (meh and too spicy) and BBQ Lamb (ok, too rich). Food was Indian fusion. Wait was long but not too long for the food. The waiter said roti was not spicy at all when in fact it was soo spicy. Barely touched it.
The food wasn't bad at all but it just takes a lot of time before it arrives. I waited 45 min atleast and I don't think that the food is that good to wait for. Don't go there if you are hungry. Maybe go there if you think you are going to get hungry. Tables were not clean also, the sides of the tables contained some oil spill and it got on my white t-shirt.
