They drizzle it with some haupia sauce that is so divine!! The service is lacking, here, however... they're super friendly but they're not very efficient. We saw our dessert come out on the counter but the server wasn't paying any attention and it just sat there for over 5 minutes. We finally said something to the waiter because we didn't want our icecream to melt from the bread pudding. It's a diner... I want to see the hustle and bustle of a diner. Plus half the restaurant was dark.. not sure if they were trying to conserve energy because half the restaurant was empty. However, it didn't feel so inviting in there. This place has huge potential because the dessert is BOMB! My son loved the oreo sundae... which is not even a sundae... it's a big plate of delicious icecream with oreos and hot fudge! Yummy!
Its a standard Big City Diner located by the Ward Theaters. It has all the locals faves, HH specials and weekly specials. Noteworthy are the chili bowls w/rice. Mammoth portions. Soup of the day was prime rib! Had to get it! Clear beef broth, chunks of soft confetti meats and pieces of yellow corn kernels. Wed are 1/2 price wine Wed!
Dinner in Honolulu... This location of Big City Diner is the closest to the Ward Consolidated Theaters. That means it's very convenient and popular with its free parking! I've been here many times and have enjoyed menu items such as salads, pork chops, and most recently, the Chicken Parmesan linguine with Roasted garlic bread...mmm! I haven't had pasta in a while, so I gobbled it up! Big City Diner has rotating week night specials which come with soup or salad. Last night, I got the Blackened ahi salad with Cream of Mushroom soup. The Blackened ahi was a bit spicy for me. The soup wasn't as thick as others and it had corn in it! Travis was our efficient server. He brought me a free refill of Coke, gave us dressing on the side, and let us have a different wasabi sauce for our ahi. He even got extra romaine lettuce for Jules in place of tomatoes! Thank you! We probably will return since this restaurant is right under the theater entrance! Bonus: they participate in Yelp Cash Back!
Ate here at this location for the first time in a looong time. We had a late movie to catch so we decided to eat a late dinner before going. It took a while to get seated, then when we were finally seated, we were told by staff that the food may take a while to come out so then first thing in my mind was, wtf?! They apparently was bombarded with customers all at the same time. The manager and host who told us this, made a huge effort to keep us from leaving because we were thinking about going to Pandas Express because of the movie time issue. The manager, Misty asked us what time our movie was and made sure our food came out before that which we did have 15mins left to spare too. Even with us not complaining or even asking for anything, their customer service was amaaazing and I wanted to recognize all the staff who helped us. I forgot the host and our waitresses name. Anyways, we ordered the big slab ribs with garlic mash potatoes, hamburger steak, and grilled cheese sandwich. My youngest said the sandwich was super cheesy, my wife loved the crispy onions that went with her yummy hamburger steak, and my oldest and I have always loved the ribs. The flavor and tenderness of the ribs is outstanding.
We may have overordered. But the pupu platter allowed us to try the calamari (with a yummy wasabi aioli), ribs and wings, both in a sweet guava bbq sauce, and the garlic toast. I really wanted to try all of it but, having checked that off my list, next time in I would order an enormous plate of the panko calamari, which we loved the most. The min noodles, we found to be a high-end lo mein, with Portuguese sausage and char siu, eggs, cabbage, onion, and bean sprouts. Should have taken the server's rec to get a veg min noodle and add meat to it; that would improve its balance. We ordered a chicken sandwich but literally just boxed it to go. Too much food! Because when the entree orders were placed we had ordered a dessert we particularly wanted to try, knowing that if we waited we certainly would not be hungry. The bread pudding was all you ever dreamed of. It had haupai (coconut cream) not drizzled over it but fully lavished, doused, heavy-handedly-gravy-ladled over it. For an upc charge you could get it a la mode, but we declined. It did not need it. And it spoiled me for all other bread pudding. Next time I go in there I might just get calamari and bread pudding.
