If you're a fan of authentic Japanese cuisine and find yourself in Birmingham, make sure to visit KOMÉ! (By the way, "KOMÉ" means rice in Japanese.) I have tried their Tonkotsu ramen, Chashu bowl, Gyudon, and Agedashi tofu, and I found all of them to be quite good! The standout dishes at this restaurant are their incredibly marinated Chashu and the Agedashi tofu. Their Chashu is first marinated in sweet soy sauce and then caramelized over an open flame. The Agedashi tofu features a crispy yet chewy panko coating, and the tofu itself is silken, not the usual firmer types you find in stores. The accompanying sauce, enriched with ginger and green onions, is generous and flavorful! The quality of their rice is also top-notch, with each grain perfectly separated, as you'd expect from an excellent Japanese restaurant. I won’t comment on the sushi or sashimi since I'm not a fan, but when it comes to hot dishes, this Japanese restaurant is unmatched in the greater Birmingham area!
This place is fantastic! I visited on a Thursday during work and couldn’t resist coming back on Saturday so my wife could try it. The Poké bowl with tuna is incredible, and my wife's burrito was equally delicious. I found the prices to be slightly above average (I usually spend around $9-$10 for lunch, and the Poké bowl was $12), but the outstanding quality of the food more than justifies the cost. It's not the kind of restaurant where you wait to be seated; instead, it has a casual vibe typical of a hidden gem. You order at the counter and can watch them prepare your meal as you move toward the register to pay and grab any drinks you want. If you’re unsure about trying it, just go for it! It’s truly amazing. I’ll definitely be back many more times!
The spicy beef ramen was excellent, and the bento box was delicious as well. It's unusual for a restaurant to charge for sauces, but it wasn't a big deal—just 50 cents for a small side of yum yum sauce. The service was decent, and the restaurant was clean and nicely decorated.
A delightful selection of traditional Japanese dishes that you won't find in most local restaurants. We ordered the Ika Maruyaki, Takoyaki, and Tonkotsu Ramen, and everything was excellent.
