This had been on my list of places to go for quite a while, and I finally made the trip for a business lunch. Open since 1937 on the edge of Midtown and Montrose, first as a grocery store, then an ice house, and now a burger centric restaurant, the quaint structure evokes an older Houston in a rapidly changing neighborhood where townhomes have quickly replaced historic buildings like this one. The place was packed when we entered, but we were luckily able to be seated at one of the only open tables inside. While the burgers are the main attraction here, the menu boasts an array of options of primarily Southern flavored items such as appetizers like fried green tomatoes, various sandwiches like the buffalo chicken sandwich, sides like fully loaded fries tater tots with chili cheese and jalapenos, limited salads, a stacked Tex Mex influenced breakfast menu as well as a number of beer and wine options happy hour is Thursday and Friday from 4 6pm . We started off with fried pickles for the appetizers, which were downright delicious, and in my mind ended up being the best tasting part of the meal. We then moved on to the obligatory burgers with myself ordering the house favorite Grim Burger mac cheese, jalapeno, bacon, cheddar cheese, and sunny side up egg and my colleagues opting for the firehouse burger habanero sauce, cayenne butter, jalapenos, lettuce, tomato, pickle, and onion . The Grim Burger was solid, though not as juicy and bursting with flavor as I would have expected given the hype and the ingredients of the burger. The habanero sauce of the Firehouse Burger was tasty, but my colleagues found the burger overall to be a bit dry. At the very least, the spice level was not lacking as one colleague only finished half and was visibly sweating at the table. One thing we did all note was the waitress didn't ask how we wanted our burgers cooked, which was strange for a burger focused menu. Further to that point, we did wish that the patties had been a bit less well done so as to have preserved more moisture and flavor. Given the reputation and Diner's, Drive ins, and Dives fame of Lankfords, I honestly was a bit underwhelmed in regards to the burgers. That's not to say the burgers were bad, just not quite as spectacular as I was expecting. All in all, still a great atmosphere, friendly staff, and a good place to grab a bite.
This is the third time I ordered from this place. I called them and asked them to make sure American cheese was added to the burger because the first two times, it wasn't. I don't know what they put on my previous burgers. What I got was an old piece of American cheese on the side. The burger was still not seasoned and left me with an aftertaste. The fries were soggy and cold. I couldn't eat them. I really liked the size of the meat but that was it. I don't understand why they get so many good reviews on Yahoo. That's why I chose to post here. I already posted on DoorDash. They are simply not that good. They don't listen to the customer. I post comments in hopes they read this and improve, but it doesn't happen. So I will let all the other people enjoy their food. I won't waste my money anymore.
Great hamburgers, fries and drinks. Can't wait to return to try some other offerings. Very friendly, which is important to me.
I can't speak enough about the burgers since I didn't try them. They didn't have an option for vegan cheese nor vegan mayo. However, I took a liking to their fried green tomatoes. When I was a child, my aunt Marie would always grow her own tomatoes and pick the green ones for eating. I hadn't eaten a fried green tomato in years since her passing. Now, I didn't ask if their fried green tomatoes were vegan. However, I didn't get sick from eating it afterwards. I liked how the dish tasted. It wasn't salty like how my aunt would prepare hers. I couldn't tell whether the tomato was in the batter because it blended so well. Thankfully, it wasn't greasy. I didn't try it with the ranch, as ranch is gross. I didn't order the chili fries, but my boyfriend did. He liked it, but wished he had his fries covered in chili and wished it wasn't so runny. The waitstaff was great and always came to check on us. Our waitress asked us many times when would we order burgers. I just wasn't interested in their burgers. It looked too messy and way too heart clogging. The sweet tea wasn't too sweet kinda watered down. We sat outside as the inside was packed on a Sunday evening. The outside was nice.
