Hollyhock Hill - Indianapolis

It has been 35 years since we ate at this restaurant. Some friends mentioned how good the food was at Hollyhock, so we gave it a try. We were extremely impressed with the efficient service and both the quality and quantity of the food. We plan to make reservations at Hollyhock Hills for next month when we have out of town family visiting.

The atmosphere was beautiful, but our server lacked knowledge of hospitality service and made excuses for herself when mistakes were made. She also used sarcasm when unnecessary during menu questions. The final bill was incorrect, with overcharges and items charged for that were never served. Despite these issues, the food was delicious and flavorful.

Our original table was in a room with a party. Hostess and waiter were very kind and moved us. Great service!

Experience was not as good as expected. Somehow, our order didn't make it to the kitchen. By the time we were informed about the order we were not as hungry and opted to just get the vegetable meal. Mashed potatoes, green beans and biscuits were very good. Salad was very bland, wet and only made of plain lettuce and a few grated carrot slivers. Beets were too soft and not as good as I remembered from a previous visit. We were offered a piece of chocolate cake for the inconvenience of our order not being prepared. Would have expected that the meals should have been complimentary or a future credit. Two, only vegetable meals $39.24 seems quite unreasonable.

Hollyhock Hill never seems to change. After nearly a century it remains the same family friendly establishment that I enjoyed with my parents and siblings more than 50 years ago. The same holds true with the food. It is predictably good food, served freshly hot from the kitchen in quantities that always ensure there is something left to take home. The menu has many options that sound delicious, but we never get past the family chicken dinner when we eat here. The staff is friendly and engaging, and they go out of their way to ensure you have everything needed to enjoy your dining experience. They have mastered the balance of appearing at tableside frequently enough to make sure everyone is well cared for, avoiding the practice of some servers to either hang around too much or to ghost the table that needs a bit of help.
